Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8601 to 8650, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 87 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8601 to 8700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8603, 8605, 8606, 8607, 8612, 8613, 8614, 8615, 8617, 8618, 8624, 8625, 8626, 8629, 8630, 8631, 8633, 8635, 8638, 8639, 8641, 8642, 8644, 8648, 8649, and 8650 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8602. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr H B Harington, Member of the Legislative Council for the North West Provinces, Calcutta. Sends papers about Mr C T Kelly, Head Assistant to the Accountant in the Punjab who wishes an increased pension, for his services during the Mutiny. Covering letter and papers no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, the correspondence has been transferred to the Home Department.
8603. Apr 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr R Temple, Calcutta. The Governor General does not consider that a statement of Mr Wilson's policy could be published at present; there are numerous difficulties.
8604. Apr 1861 Letter from Ensign P Dwyer, Her Majesty's 88th Regiment, Almorah. Asks for employment. Sends extracts from a Report of the Medical Board. Copy of reply, there are numerous applicants for posts, and the Governor General can hold out little hope. See also 7644, 7699, 8673, 8835
8605. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Officiating Secretary Foreign Department, Calcutta. In reply, wishes to return to the Punjab while he still has strength to undertake a long journey. Asks for three months leave. See also 8600
8606. Apr 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr G C Barnes, Calcutta. Asking that if he is unable to undertake the Durbar, a correct translation of the Talookdars' address may be given Young as soon as possible, and also a vernacular translation of the Governor General's reply.

8612. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr C T Buckland, Civil and Sessions Judge, Hooghly. In reply, the publication of his Torture Report was made with the permission of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, as stated twice in the preface. Will write to stop publication in England, but he may be too late. Copy of reply, his explanation is quite satisfactory. See also 8552, 8594
8613. Apr 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. Sends a letter from Sir G Clerk enclosing a letter from Commodore Wellesley about steamers for the Indus, with comments. Copy of reply, the question of the Indus Flotilla is at present under discussion.
8614. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr C U Aitchison, Under Secretary, Foreign Department, Calcutta. Replies for Mr Barnes about the Talookdars' address. Mr Barnes is not well, and anxious to be relieved of duty; suggests Barnes be not written to any more. Copy of reply, the Governor General is sure that Aitchison will do all that is required very well. A special Durbar Gazette will be published, the Governor General wishes to see the draft of this. 8633. Apr 1861 Letter from Mr G N Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. In reply, Lieutenant Wilcox has been appointed in place of Captain Haig. The 12 Sirdars were greatly pleased with their reception. His work is very hard at present, as everyone refused anything by his predecessors is now trying with him, to the great benefit of the stamp revenue. The Seetapore Police has recently searched the house of a Mussulman of some standing, and discovered compromising papers. A full report will be submitted shortly. In reply, says he has not the data on which to base an estimate for a wooden tramway; but if estimates were called for from two District Engineers, from areas where wood was both scarce and plentiful, and the two estimates used to provide an average, the information could be obtained. Reports that the Secunder Begum has sent him a large Persian Book, illuminated, for Lady Canning, and asks for orders; the present is in return for the book on Windsor Castle.
