Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8701 to 8750, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 88 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8701 to 8800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8702, 8706, 8706a, 8707, 8708, 8709, 8711, 8712, 8713, 8714, 8715, 8716, 8717, 8718, 8719, 8722, 8726, 8728, 8733, 8734, 8738, 8741, 8743, 8744, 8745, 8749, and 8750 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8702. May 1861 Letter from Mr R J Carbery, attorney for Thakoorine Byjnauth Koor, Talookdar of Summaspore, Calcutta .On behalf of his client, states her admiration for Mr Wingfield and her devotion to the British Raj. Copy of reply, the Governor General has received this letter with pleasure, and is glad to find the Thakoorine approves of the arrangements for the administration of Oudh.
8703. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Boate, Calcutta. Sends various testimonials (no longer enclosed) and asks for re-employment. Copy of reply, request refused.
8704. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Mr W Braybrooke, late Adjutant, Seonee Military Police, Bombay. Asks for employment. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General can hold out little hope. See also 8479, 8863, 8982

8706a. May 1861 Letter from Monsieur Lombard, French Consul, Calcutta. Writes recommending Monsieur Lassus' remedy for dysentery to Mr Laing. Two letters. Endorsed: answered privately.
8707. May 1861 Letter from Mr W S Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Mr Taylor, Deputy Commissioner of Nya Doomka, reporting serious disturbances among the Sonthals. Taylor has been ordered to send news daily. There are 400 Military Police at Beerbhoom, and 100 have been sent to Taylor. Mr Plowden at Beerbhoom has been told to send off 100 men to Raneegunge if necessary. Copy of reply, the Governor General entirely approves of the action taken.
8708. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton Vetch, Alipore. Sends his views on several routes for the establishment of communication between India and China. Copy of earlier letter, sending him confidentially a copy of a Memorandum by Colonel Sir A Cotton, enclosed in a Secret Despatch from the Secretary of State, on proposed routes to China, and asking him for his opinion (Memorandum not enclosed). 8709. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton Vetch, late Deputy Commissioner, Asam, Calcutta. In reply, will give his best attention to the confidential papers sent to him on 3 May. Asks for Dr Bayfield's route map to consult, also Colonel Yule's map of Burma. Copy of reply, sending him papers and maps. See also 8708, 8738, 8754, 8755, 8761
8710. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Mr M Kealy, Bombay. Further to his plea for justice. Copy of reply, he will receive a reply from the Home Department. See also 8822
8711. May 1861 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, President, Military Finance Commission, Ishapore. Sends a note from Colonel Hannyngton reporting that he will remain in India, at the Nilghiris instead of going to England.
8712. May 1861 Letter from Mr C Currie, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Sends information about the quantity of land represented by Jumma which was left with the Talookdars at the 1264 Fasli Settlement, how much land was later confiscated. Sir E Peacock's speech in the Legislative Council on the legality of grants made by Government was very mischievous, and Sir B Frere's reply very lame. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. 8713. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Colonel J Abbott, 1st Battalion Foot Artillery, Delhi. Renews his request to be restored to the Political Department. Endorsed: answered by Governor General. See also 8804
8714. May 1861 Letter from Mrs C Williams, wife of F St C Williams, Lucknow. Renews her appeal on her husband's behalf, for an early settlement of his case. See also 7975, 7977, 8286, 8326
8715. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Reports the measures taken on receipt of news of a possible Sonthal rising, and sends a letter from Mr Alexander, Magistrate of Beerbhoom, and one from Mr Taylor, Assistant Commissioner Nya Doomka, copies.
8716. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends the only information about the Sonthals received on 5 May, a telegram from the Commissioner of Beerbhoom Mr Plowden is quite right to go to Nya Doomka, though it is not in his Division; perhaps he could be granted temporary powers as Commissioner of the Sonthal Pergunnahs.
8717. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Says he could not explain matters to the Governor General in a telegram, which might lead His Excellency to think there was more in the matter than appeared. It is a mere precautionary measure, and the writer will take the responsibility on himself.
8718. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a telegram just received from the Commissioner of Beerbhoom. Mr Robinson is not immediately expected at Nya Doomka. Mr Plowden and Mr Wood have both gone to Nya Doomka, and the former has been sent authority to act as Commissioner of the Sunthal Pergunnahs if necessary. Copy of earlier letter, it is very desirable that Robinson be sent to Nya Doomka as soon as possible. Copy of reply, Robinson should be hurried to the spot.
8719. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Colonel H Bruce, Calcutta.Sends a letter from Maharajah Man Singh; he is delighted at having had a private interview with the Governor General. Asks if there would be any objection to selling the steamer 'Myoo' to the Maharajah (Letter no longer enclosed). See also 8726
8720. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant J S A H Byrne, Chundernagore .Asks for an early decision on his claim to arrears of pay. Copy of reply, his claim has already been replied to.
8721. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Mrs Brandreth, Umballa. Has sent five bracelets for Lord Canning, explains the delay.
8722. May 1861 Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Surveyor General, Calcutta. Says that reference to the map of the Nizam's territories referred to by the Private Secretary will show a blank, as the area has never been surveyed. 8725. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Mr E C Bayley, Civil and Sessions Judge, Agra. Sends a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed), he has telegraphed to the Lieutenant Governor and will be ready to start when the reply arrives. Governor General's Book number 1969
8726. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Rajah Man Singh, Howrah. Was much pleased with his reception by the Private Secretary. Sends Baboo Parbutty Charan with some information about Nawab Ali Nuchi Khan. See also 8719
8727. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Has received a private application on behalf of a native omitted from the Patna Durbar, and asks how the man should act.
8728. May 1861 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, President, Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Reports that Colonel McGoun, Controller of Military Finance, and Colonel Simpson, Inspector General of Ordnance, Madras, are due to return to their offices. They approve of the measures to be carried out by Balfour. Colonel Hannyngton's illness is a great misfortune.

8730. May 1861 Letter from Mr G U Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Comments on Mr Elliot's transfer to the North West Provinces; asks if he could be given a higher grade, or remain in Oudh. Copy of reply, Elliot cannot be allowed to remain in Oudh. 8732. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Captain S Mainwaring, 2nd Madras Native Infantry Deputy Assistant, Quarter Master General, Ceded Districts, Bellary. Applies for the post of Military Secretary to the Commissioner of Mysore. Copy of reply, this officer is nominated by the Commissioner.

8735. May 1861 Letter from Sir A de H Larpent, Calcutta. Sends an appeal against his dismissal to the Governor General (no longer enclosed) and asks for an interview. Copy of reply, his appeal has been sent to the Financial Department. The Governor General will see the writer when he has heard from the Bengal Government. See also 8618.
8736. May 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr C U Aitchison. Sending him a letter from Mrs Dessa to Lady Canning and asking if Mr Dessa deserves assistance.
8738. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Vetch, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to consult Lieutenant Brodie's Report on his deputation to the Naga Hills, his own Report on his visit to the Singpho and Naga tribes, both of 1842, and the map constructed from them. 8741. May 1861 Letter from Mr S J Becher, Officiating Commissioner of Benares. The Maharajah of Benares having succeeded in killing the tiger which the Governor General failed to shoot on the occasion of his visit to the Rajah's hunting grounds at Chakea, His Highness is anxious to know whether His Excellency would do him the honour of accepting the skin and skull. Copy of reply, the Governor General is very glad to accept. See also 8878, 8972
8742. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant W Tweedie, 4th Bengal Europeans, Officiating 2nd Assistant Resident, Hyderabad. Asks for employment in the Political Department mentioning the post of Assistant to the Resident in Nepal. One enclosure. Copy of reply, his application will be considered, but no promise can be made. See also 8844
8743. May 1861 Letter from the Honourable Sir H B Frere, Member of the Supreme Council of India, Calcutta. Returns with thanks Mr Yule's letter to the Governor General of 2 May (not enclosed) and observes that Yule seems to be one of the few men who can be trusted to enter into another man's work and honestly carry it on. Endorsed: See Mr Yule to Governor General dated 2 May 1861
8744. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a telegram and a letter from Mr Taylor, and the Santhal disturbances, the situation is improving. Taylor rather needlessly telegraphed Mr Fergusson at Patna and alarmed him.
8745. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Reports Mr Robinson's movements. 100 of the Hill Rangers have left Bhaugulpore for Deoghur. Asks permission to establish a telegraph office at Bhaugulpore. The Sikhs are at Purneah. Baker's Military Police are coming down to Pointee as fast as possible. Copy of reply, he may establish a temporary telegraph office.

8749. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a telegram from Mr Plowden, reporting that all is quiet, and the capture of Soonder.
8750. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Sends a report from Mr Plowden (no longer enclosed) and observes that there seems no more to be done, except to make a full report of the origin of the excitement. Mr Robinson has been telegraphed to hurry on to Doomka.
