Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8751 to 8800, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 88 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8701 to 8800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8752, 8753, 8754, 8755, 8756, 8757, 8760, 8761, 8762, 8763, 8765, 8768, 8778, 8785, 8786, 8789, 8790, 8793, 8794, 8796, 8798, and 8800 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8753. May 1861 Letter from Captain E M Lawford, 4th Madras European Light Cavalry, Kamptee. Asks for some information to help him to decide about volunteering for the Dragoons. The general feeling in Kamptee is in favour of the Staff Corps, and General Service, though many prefer Local Service. See also 8752

8756. Apr - May 1861 Letter from Major T A Cowper, Commissioner, Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Berar. Complains of the practice of direct correspondence carried on by the Resident with his Deputies without the intervention of the Commissioner. Complains of the want of system in the conduct of business, and of lack of proper supervision. There exists a clique in administration, and he is looked upon as an interloper. Believes the whole Contingent wants overhauling; not only is money wasted, but a large and dangerous force is paid for. The treaty arrangements might be revised. To Sir Bartle Frere.

Sends a copy of a Telegraph Message and reports on the state of affairs, and sends an explanation of the disturbance, provided by Mr Taylor. Intends to make inquiries on his own. To Mr Seton Karr. 8759. May 1861 Letter from Major J S D Tulloch, Officiating Cantonment Joint Magistrate, Gonda. Writes further to his application for the post of Cantonment Joint Magistrate of Lucknow. Copy of reply, recommendations for such posts are made by the Chief Commissioner. See also 8622, 8633.
8760. May 1861 Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner, Simla. Writes about the remission of duty on materials for uniforms of the Simla Volunteer Corps. Copy of reply, the duty cannot be remitted.
8761. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Vetch, Alipore. Returns certain papers and maps. Asks for a copy of his Report of 11 May. 8762. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Reports that Mr Plowden has telegraphed that all is quiet, and Mr Robinson has arrived at Doomka. Mr Plowden leaves immediately for Burdwan.
8763. May 1861 Letter from Mr W Seton Karr, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta .Sends a letter from Mr Plowden (not enclosed). The Sikhs are coming up from Chittagong by steamer, and with Baker's men from Darjeeling, there will be enough men to watch the whole country.

8766. May 1861 Letter from Major C Hervey, General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoitee, Jubbulpore. Is sending carpets and other goods ordered by Lady Canning from the Jubbulpore Factory.
8767. May 1861 Letter from Captain F K Bacon, Officiating 2nd in Command, Cawnpore Levy. Applies for the post of Pension Pay Master of Cawnpore, or any other post.
8768. May 1861 Letter from H H Rundheer Sing, Rajah of Kuppoorthalla. Complains of the behaviour of his two brothers, and asks for a Sunnud. Has heard that Lord Canning is about to leave India and the Duke of Newcastle is to succeed him, asks Lord Canning to name him to his successor. Copy of reply, the Governor General will attend to the question of the Sunnud when the matter reaches him from the Punjab Government. As far as the Private Secretary knows, there is no truth in the report of the Duke of Newcastle coming to India. There is little chance of Lord Canning leaving India before Jan 1862.

8775. May 1861 Letter from Mr F P Murray, late Ensign, Ceylon Rifles, Colombo. Sends a letter from Mr Wilkinson, Consul in Syra, and asks for civil employment. Copy of reply, request refused.
8776. May 1861 Letter from Major F S Roberts VC, late Assistant. Quarter Master General, Governor General's Camp, Simla. Asks if he has any chance of an appointment from Lord Canning, as before entering the Staff Corps he would like to be sure of a permanent appointment. Copy of reply, it is impossible to say that he will get an appointment.
8778. May 1861 Letter from Major J C Brooke, Commandant Meywar Bheel Corps and Deputy Commissioner and Political Agent, Jeypoor. Sends an abstract of a Memorandum on the Oodepoor succession, and observes that the Rana is not likely to survive the present season. When he was in Calcutta, it seemed to him that the Governor General was not fully aware of the apprehension in Rajputana about the right of adoption prior to the publication of the order conceding the right. Has received a letter from General Lawrence asking him to mention to the Governor General the conduct of the Rana to two or three individuals who had been deputed by him in 1853 to settle with the Government, the terms of his agreement, and to whom the Rana and his brother had given guarantees; and the necessity of making the Rana keep to his engagements. Has sent a sword and a Kulumdan, from the Maharajah of Pertabghur for the Queen. Pedigree enclosed. Copy of reply, acknowledging receipt of the presents for the Queen. Private Secretary has written to Lawrence about the Rana's guarantees, the Governor General does not remember seeing any official papers about this. See also 8792, 8793, 8874

8790. May 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Abbottabad. Has read Mr Laing's speech with much pleasure. Has no doubt that the regiments to be reduced will be carefully scrutinized. Suggests that Curetons Mooltanees and Linds Pathans be spared. Has sent an official report on the three regiments in Peshawar. The Attock Tunnel is progressing.
8791. May 1861 Letter from Mr H Lucas, Despatcher, Foreign Department, Calcutta. Sends a petition asking for a remission of the fine imposed upon him for having failed to forward to the Government of Bengal the Nagree version of the Sikkim Treaty. Petition no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, returning his petition, which should be submitted through his superior.
8792. May 1861 Letter from Mr E C Bayley, Officiating Secretary to Government of India Foreign Department, Calcutta. Has received the sword and Kulumdan, which will be sent off by the next mail if possible, with the memorandum and translation. Copy of earlier letter. See also 8778
8793. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Colonel G St P Lawrence, Governor General's Agent, Rajputana, Aboo. In reply, sends an extract from a letter from Major Brooke about the causes of the Meywar Rana's ill treatment of Shere Sing because of his share in drawing up an agreement. The Rana does not keep his engagements. Lawrence believes that Sir H Edwardes expects to be his successor in Rajpootana. Asks if the Government has taken the Aboo School; the new Master and Mistress are failures. Copy of earlier letter, about the Rana. Copy of reply, the Governor General would like to receive an abstract on the case, and the points on which interference is contemplated. Would like a resume of the history, geography, population, natural resources, and dealings with the British of Rajputana, for none such exists at Calcutta; Private Secretary thinks nothing has been decided about the Aboo School. 8798. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H L Thuillier, Surveyor General of India, Calcutta. Will send a copy of the new map of the North East Frontier and China as soon as possible. Would like to have Bayfield's Journal and Vetch's and Hannay's routes which Colonel Yule borrowed in 1856. Sends a map of India without the Hills for Lady Canning, a proof copy (not enclosed). Copy of reply, the Journals will be sent. The map for Lady Canning seems very good. Further comments on recent alterations of territory. See also 8926, 9277, 9337, 8800, 8794.
