Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8801 to 8850, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 89 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8801 to 8900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8802, 8803, 8804, 8805, 8808, 8809, 8813, 8814, 8815, 8817, 8818, 8820, 8821, 8823, 8825, 8827, 8829, 8830, 8833, 8836, 8845, 8846, 8848, and 8849 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
8801. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant C C Taylor, late 56th Native Infantry, Officiating Interpreter to Her Majesty's 42nd Highlanders, Agra. Hopes he may be given political employment. Copy of reply, there are few vacancies and many candidates. See also 8971, 9146
8802. May 1861 Letter from Mr A H Cocks, Commissioner, Jubbulpore Division, Jubbulpore. Asks for the return of letters about Mr Prinsep's opinion on Cocks' claim to the Punjab Medal. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary had had no idea that Lord Dalhousie had expressed himself so strongly against the grant of the Medal to Cocks; in view of this, and the revocation of the Directors' resolution in Cocks' favour, the question cannot be reopened in India. Many other people would have similar claims to the Medal.
8803. May 1861 Letter from Mr J Talboys Wheeler, Professor of Moral Philosophy and Logic in the Madras Presidency College, Madras. Sends two books written by himself, 'Hand book to the Madras Records', and 'Madras in the Olden Times'. As he has nearly finished his work on the 'Madras records', would like to be employed by the Government of India. Copy of reply, thanking him for the books. There is already a Committee in Calcutta for examining and sorting the Bengal Archives. His Excellency would be glad to know when the Professor finishes his work at Madras, although he cannot promise him any employment. Endorsed: Selection Book number 340, 341, 353. See also 8893, 9156
8804. May 1861 Letter from Mr C Currie, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Sends two statements showing how many Talookdars there were at annexation, how many villages they had, and the Jumma paid for them, how many were entirely deprived of their lands, and how many had all their possessions left to them, and, of those who were partially deprived, the number of villages taken and the number left. The measurement is given in villages. Explains differences between these figures, and those in his last communication. Finds it difficult to distinguish confiscations made under the Proclamation from those which took place for concealment of arms. Regrets to hear of Mr Laing's and Sir R Napier's illness. Second statement enclosed, of land confiscated for various reasons. See also 8712
8805. May 1861 Copy of a letter to Colonel James Abbott, Delhi. Acknowledging receipt of his letter. His Excellency is well aware of the services rendered by Colonel Abbott, but cannot change his opinion as stated in his letter of 7 May. Governor General's Book number 1996

Sends a prospectus of a work he intends to publish for the relief of the sufferers by famine in the North West, and asks for the Governor General's and Private Secretary's patronage. 8808. May 1861 Letter from the Honourable Sir H B E Frere, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. Asks when the Governor General could see Rissaldar Shere Sing Sirdar Bahadoor, late of the Baillie Guard, who wishes to pay his respects before going to England.
8809. May 1861 Letter from Mr G Norton, Calcutta. Asks for His Excellency's attention to be drawn to the case of the prisoner Chowdry Ameer Ally, Zemindar of Oudh. Copy of reply, orders have been given. See also 7862, 7970
8810. May 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel F W Burroughs, Bengal Army, Barrackpore. Applies for the post of Superintendent of the Mysore Princes, or any other post. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, Major Herbert has already been appointed. See also 8817

8812. May 1861 Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner, Jubbulpore Division, Jubbulpore. Writes about the silver girdles sent for Lady Canning. Reports the death of Captain T C Boddam, Superintending Engineer at Jubbulpore. See also 8610
8813. May 1861 Copy of a letter to Sirdar Shumsher Singh Sindhanwala Bahadoor, Umritsur. Acknowledging receipt of his letter. Private Secretary is glad to hear he is pleased with the powers bestowed upon him. As to the question of the descent of his estate, the Governor General will receive favourably any recommendation Sir R Montgomery may make. See also 8814
8814. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Says that some action was taken about the heirs of the deceased Sirdars, but the matter was dropped; it will be reconsidered now. Is glad that the Maharanee Chunda Kour has gone to England, where she will be harmless. Shere Sing will be made much of in England. Says that Sir J Login has applied to Mr McLeod for information about Dhulleep Sing; McLeod has been warned not to give information, except on the understanding that it is not to be used against the Government. Refers to a proposal of Sir J Login's about sheep from the Punjab for Miss Coutts. Copy of earlier letter, asking if Montgomery has considered the suggestion made previously in the Foreign Office letter of 11 Feb 1861 about the heirs of deceased Punjab Sirdars, viz, that a more liberal provision should be made for them than was laid down in 1849. Comments on this. Informs Montgomery that the old Resaldar Sher Singh of the Baillie Guard is going to England for 5 months, with a circular bill for 400 Rupees, and letters from Lord Canning and the Commander in Chief. 8818. May 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Sends a letter from Major Meade reporting a conversation with Scindia, which is not to be put on record, about the exchange of lands. A semi-obliterated part of Meade's letter asks if it is true that the Duke of Newcastle is to succeed Lord Canning. See also 8912

Manuscript Memorandum about the distribution of the Commissioned Officers attached to the British regiments of Cavalry and Infantry on the Bengal Establishment on 1 Apr 1860, 1 Oct 1860, and 1 Apr 1861. 3. Printed Memorandum of General Tulloch's views about the payments in England on account of British troops serving in India. 8845. Jun 1861 Letter from Captain L Pelly, Calcutta. Proposes to join Sir G Clerk's Camp in the Deccan, on his way to his acting appointment at Zanzibar. Copy of reply, His Excellency has no objection.
8846. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Rajah Radha Kant Bahadoor, President of the British Indian Association, Calcutta. Says the Association wishes to send a deputation to express their thanks for the satisfactory results of the financial operations of Government, and to address His Excellency on the Income Tax. 8847. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Lieutenant A H Fletcher Campbell, late 4th Europeans, Lucknow. Asks to be appointed to some native corps, to enable him to study the native languages. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere. See also 7323
8848. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Colonel G St P Lawrence, Governor General's Agent for Rajpootana, Aboo. Feels much aggrieved at the tone of some official letters received from the Foreign Secretary about Kerowly and Bhurtpore, and submits that in his recommendation of his son in law Captain Impey and in the course he adopted with reference to Major Bouverie and Lieutenant Walter he was actuated by public and not private motives. Copy of reply, the charges which he assumes to have been brought against him are for the most part imaginary. He is asked to specify which passages offended him. See also 8950
8849. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Mr C B Thornhill, Commissioner of Allahabad. Reports that Mr Gower has succeeded in working his locomotive steam engine very successfully. He hopes to have a duplicate by the cold season, and to run them between Lucknow and Cawnpore as soon as the road is repaired. The money for the engine was advanced by Chotee Lall, a native of Allahabad, and Thornhill would like to tell him that his enterprise is regarded with much approval by the Governor General. Copy of reply, the Governor General sends his congratulations to Mr Gower and his approval to Chotee Lall.
8850. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Captain E Thomas, 3rd Bengal Europeans, Agra. Repeats his request for staff employment. Copy of reply, there are so many applicants, there is little chance of his appointment. He should apply to the Lieutenant Governors. See also 7348, 7382, 8917
