Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8851 to 8900, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 89 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8801 to 8900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8854, 8855, 8856, 8861, 8865, 8874, 8876, 8878, 8880, 8881, 8882, 8884, 8888, 8889, 8891, 8893, 8896, 8897, and 8898 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

Copy of reply, though Police appointments are made by the Governor General they depend upon recommendations by the Chief Commissioner.

8853. Jun 1861 Letter from Mr W Brett, Editor of 'The Englishman', Calcutta. Sends a copy of a special telegram announcing the appointment of the Reverend F Gall as Bishop of Madras; events in the American Civil War; and that the Duke of Newcastle will arrive in India at the end of 1861 and assume Government in Jan 1862. Protests against a recommendation that another officer should officiate as Master Attendant, while he acted as Superintendent of the Dock Yard. Letter no longer enclosed. 8874. May - Jun 1861 Letter from Major R L Taylor, Political Agent Meywar, Neemuch. With reference to an anonymous letter which purports to have been written from Saloombur by the Rao Sahib to the Indore Minister, explains the state of feeling between the Rana and his Thakoors, and hopes, if allowed, to mediate successfully between the Rana and the Saloombur Chief. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not approve of unofficial negotiations; he should submit his proposals to Government. Nothing has come of an earlier report that the Rao Sahib wished to surrender. See also 8778, 8796

8878. Jun 1861 Letter from Mr S J Becher, Officiating Commissioner of Benares. Asks if the Shahzada Suhadeo Sing has obtained the permission of the Governor General to take charge of his Jagheer in Oudh, or to pass the hot weather at Benares. Hopes to despatch the tiger skin and head shortly. Copy of reply, the Governor General sees no objection to Shahzada Suhadeo Sing remaining in Benares during the hot weather. See also 8741, 8972

8884. Jun 1861 Letter from Mr G U Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Writes about vacancies in the Oudh Commission. There is no clue yet to the Oonao murders. Suspects some of the Zemindars must be in league with the murderers; hopes the next batch of cases will lead to a discovery. Trusts that orders may soon be issued to the Oudh Government about the Income and Licence Taxes for the current year. Copy of earlier letter about vacancies in the Commission. Is not able to say when his work on the Madras records will be completed. Has had considerable experience of the working of the Public Record Office in England, and his services might be useful if a similar Record Office were to be established in Calcutta.
