Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8901 to 8950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 90 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8901 to 9000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8901, 8902, 8903, 8904, 8905, 8907, 8908, 8909, 8912, 8920, 8923, 8926, 8928, 8930, 8932, 8934, 8935, 8938, 8941, 8942, 8944, 8946, 8948, and 8950 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8912. Jun 1861 Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Sends a copy of his telegram of 8 Jun in which he stated he had good reason to hope he could conclude an arrangement by which all Scindia's estates, whether Jaghires or religious grants in the Deccan, could be transferred to the British. He hoped to get His Highness's hereditary villages also, but success depended upon it being unknown that he was about to leave. He writes in explanation of his plan. 8924. Jun 1861 Letter from Assistant Surgeon J J Clarke, Benares Horse, Dehree.Sends copies of testimonials, and applies for the Medical Charge of an Irregular Cavalry Corps or some Hill station. Copy of reply, for an appointment to an Irregular Corps he should apply to the Commander-in-Chief. His application for a Hill station will be noted.

Sends correspondence with the Military authorities about his petition to build on land granted him by the late Brigadier in command of the Gwalior Division. Cover only. 8926. Jun 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H L Thuillier, Surveyor General Calcutta. Sends a report recently sent in to Sir R Birch about the delays in England in dealing with valuable surveys made in India. Has just heard from Sir A Waugh that he has failed to find any Geogl [geographical] department at the India Office. No one there knows anything about Mr Walker, the Government Hydrographer, who appears to carry on business at his own shop for his own advantage. He is supposed to have resigned, and has been succeeded by Dr Ballantyne, the Sanskrit scholar. The map of Kashmir has not appeared yet, in spite of the Governor General's request two years earlier. 8928. Jun 1861 Letter from Major E K Elliot, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. Sends extracts from letters from Captain Haig, District Engineer on the Godavery, to Lieutenant Glasford. It would appear that the coal in the Tal river has yet to be discovered. Is much pleased with the new Inspector General of Police; what he now requires is a good Secretary in place of a Personal Assistant. The reductions in the Irregular Force are progressing, he expects a saving of three lakhs by the close of the present year. Asks if there is anything going on at Hyderabad between the Nizam and his Minister. Trusts there is no truth in the rumour of a further reduction of salaries, his has already been reduced 25 per cent below that of his predecessor. Three papers. 8930. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Dr E F Lazarus, proprietor Medical Hall Press, Benares. Has sent two copies of 'The Hindoostani Choral Book', for Lady Canning and the Queen. Copy of reply, Lady Canning accepts the book with much pleasure. It is not usual to send to the Queen any works from India which are not forwarded through the Government. Miscellaneous Book No 308
8931. Jun 1861 Letter from Lieutenant J W Stansfeld, 51st Madras Native Infantry Sub Assistant Commissary General, Moulmein. Asks to be nominated to the charge of the Timber Agency about to be established in the Tenasserim Provinces and states his qualifications. Copy of reply, arrangements have already been made. 8932. Jun 1861 Letter from Colonel A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Believes that no one has crossed the country between Ava and Assam since Dr Griffith the botanist, and his journey is related in his published Journals. Hopes to send by the next mail a memorandum about communication between Burma and China. Some time ago he sent a memorandum to Mr Beadon on the subject, proposing that the line of country between British Burma to Shweegyeen etc be surveyed. Comments on routes. See also 8659
8933. Jun 1861 Letter from Mr A Grote, Member of the Board of Revenue, Calcutta. Writes in reply that Mr Carnac has been demi-officially appointed Secretary to the Income Tax Commissioners as a temporary arrangement. Copy of earlier letter asking for information.
8934. Jun 1861 Letter from Mr A Grote, Member of the Board of Revenue, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Major Tickell, reporting the death of one of the Andamanese, and asking for permission to send to Calcutta the twp survivors, with the object of returning them to Port Blair, as otherwise they will die and cause more harm and counteract future efforts to civilize the Andamanese. Comments on the disposal of the skeleton of the deceased Andamanese (Tickell's letter is a copy). Copy of reply, the two men should certainly be sent back as soon as possible. The fight over the skeleton is amusing.
8935. Jun 1861 Copy of a letter to Major General Sir R Birch, Secretary to Government Military Department. Asking him to bring to the Governor General Thuillier's letter of 22 May about the inexcusable delay on the part of the Government Hydrographer in sending out maps. See also 8926
8936. Jun 1861 Letter from Captain F Fortescue, Interpreter and Quarter Master, 73rd Native Infantry Julpigoree.As his regiment is likely to be broken up shortly, asks for employment. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancies at present. For an appointment in the Punjab, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor.
8937. Jun 1861 Letter from Mr C U Aitcheson, Under Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department Calcutta. Sends a memorandum from the Superintendent of Thuggee about Lieutenant Walcott, whose health is so bad he must go home, and suggests arrangements in consequence. Copy of reply, the Thuggee Department is not likely to last much longer in its present shape. Walcott's services may be placed at the disposal of the Military Department. See also 8623, 8675, 8838
8938. Jun 1861 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, President, Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Replies about a Timber Agency, with a letter from Captain Benson (Benson's letter no longer enclosed). Copy of earlier letter asking for information. Copy of reply, the relative positions of Benson and the District Officer must be defined before Benson's appointment is settled. See also 8931

8947. Jun 1861 Copy of a letter to Captain J H Tronson, Calcutta. Sending two bills of lading for two cases for the Governor General. See also 8946
8948. Jun 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H L Thuillier, Surveyor General of India, Calcutta. Suggests Captain Basevi, Engineers, 1st Assistant Great Trigonometrical Survey, as a suitable officer to accompany the expedition into Chinese Tartary with Captain Smyth. Smyth doubts the qualifications of Lieutenant Jackson. Copy of reply, a passport is being requested for Captain Basevi. No further steps can be taken until the result of the reference for passports is known. If the Government succeed in procuring them, Private Secretary hopes the expedition will be directed to find its way along the Saupoo to the eastward, or North East towards Lake Khokonor, or both, rather than in the direction of Khotea. The British may safely leave that part of the world to the Russians. See also 8821, 8964, 8967, 8989

8950. Jun 1861 Letter from Colonel G St P Lawrence, Governor General's Agent, Rajpootana, Aboo. Is relieved to learn that the Governor General considers the charges made in passages quoted to be for the most part imaginary. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not think this subject need be pursued further. Some of the insignia of the 'Star' order have arrived; they are very handsome, and worth £900 each. It is difficult to translate the statues of the order into the vernacular languages. See also 8848
