Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 8951 to 9000, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 90 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 8901 to 9000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 8901, 8902, 8903, 8904, 8905, 8907, 8908, 8909, 8912, 8920, 8923, 8926, 8928, 8930, 8932, 8934, 8935, 8938, 8941, 8942, 8944, 8946, 8948, and 8950 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

8953. Jun 1861 Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner Simla.Asks to be allowed to accompany an exploring party to Lhassa. Copy of reply, he is too late in his application, unless he can claim to be a scientific surveyor. There are already too many applicants, and the passports have been applied for.

8965. Jul 1861 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, President, Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Says that on 2 Jul he had an interview with the Governor General about the case of Major Turnbull, and on the following day he completed his Report. However Sir R Napier inquired on 12 Jul why Balfour had not obeyed the orders of Government on this case. Copy of earlier letter, asking Balfour to call on the Governor General and explain the position of Major Turnbull and other officers of the Clothing Establishment. Copy of reply

8967. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H L Thuillier, Surveyor General Calcutta. Will ask Captain Basevi about the expedition. Agrees with the Private Secretary about the direction to be taken, but it is a fearful desert. The Jesuits' map of China is the original authority for Sanpoo. Says that Captain H Strachey, the former Tibet Commissioner is now at Calcutta and might give useful information. See also 8948, 8964, 8989
8968. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from John Sham Rao, Saugor. Asks for the Governor General's patronage towards the publication of an abstract of the Penal Code prepared by him. 8969. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Major T A Cowper, Commissioner Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Booldanah. Has forwarded officially a correspondence with the Resident at Hyderabad about the administration of Berar; finding himself unable to work properly under Colonel Davidson, asks to be allowed 20 months furlough, without loss of appointment. Copy of reply, the Governor General will consider the papers when they come before him officially.
8970. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Lieutenant A Pullan, Adjutant, late Benares Horse, Dehree Ghat. Asks to be allowed to accompany the Tibetan Expedition. Copies of testimonials. Four papers. Copy of reply, no more officers are to be appointed, except perhaps a scientific surveyor.

8977. Jul 1861 Letter from Mr J Hume, Calcutta. Says that the Military Orphan Press have declined to undertake the printing of 'The Indian Empire', so there will be some delay in the printing of the first number. Sends three copies of a printed paper about the newspaper, including the first editorial article.

8980. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner Simla. At the request of Meah Omeid Sing of Bughat, asks whether any orders have been received from England in his case. The writer has obtained three months leave, intends visiting Cashmere and Ladakh, and hopes to be allowed to go to Lhasa. He could easily persuade a photographer and first rate bird-stuffer to join the party. Copy of reply, no final orders have been received about Oomed Singh.

8988. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah. Reports his endeavours to find an outlet for the coal from Singrowlee; recommends a close geological examination of the Sohagpore District next cold season. If a Survey for the purpose of deciding a route from the Singrowlee coal beds is contemplated, proposes that two or three exploring parties of natives be sent out at once. Copy of reply, at present the proposal cannot be agreed to. The Rewah Rajah must take the initiative, at least by consenting to the arrangement. Asks what are the views of the Durbar. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Khan Jehan Khan, nephew of His Highness the Nawab of Jowrah, Jowrah.Sends a copy of his Memorial to the Agent for Central India asking for the restitution of property seized by the Prize Agents at Delhi during the Mutiny, or, in lieu, the grant of confiscated lands. 8994. Jun - Jul 1861 Letter from Major E K Elliot, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seetabuldee. In reply, will do his best about photographs of the different races. Is anxious to see the end of the Mysore question. In the event of restoration, care should be taken to secure a guarantee for those whom the British Government have so long governed. A long minority with a Regency under a Resident would be the best policy. Hopes that Salar Jung will be able to hold his ground, but one day there will be trouble at Hyderabad. As long as all is quiet there, peace will continue in Southern India. If anyone could be found who would adjust the claims of the Arabs, the future would be more promising. Major Erskine leaves Jubbulpore in Sep having succeeded to some property. The Brigadier Commanding at Kamptee has left for Hyderabad to join Mr Temple. Asks for the Governor General's aid towards the construction of a church at Seetabuldee, drawing and subscription list enclosed. See also 8696, 8928

Hopes that Synd Majed is not as ill as is said, as his death would undo the whole of the recent arrangement, if Thoweynee were elected to rule the Zanzibar State. Further comments.
