Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9101 to 9150, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 92 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9101 to 9200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9103, 9107, 9108, 9110, 9111, 9111a, 9112, 9113, 9114, 9115, 9120, 9121, 9122, 9124, 9127, 9132, 9133, 9140, 9141a, 9147, and 9148 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9102. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Assistant Surgeon P O'Brien, Medical Store Keeper, Saugor .Applies for the post of Superintendent of Coolie Emigration. Copy of testimonial. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Bengal Government.
9103. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah. Says that the Rewah Rajah has after some demur agreed to the terms mentioned for the construction of a road from the coal locality. One of the difficulties was the Rajah's fear that it might be held as a precedent to require him to construct other roads through his territories. As regards a survey of the unknown parts of the Rajah's country, His Highness seems indisposed to incur any expense. Asks if Government would aid the Rajah with a loan of 4 lacs of Rupees on Government interest, to enable him to meet the expenses of the marriage of his two daughters and two sisters. Copy of reply, he will hear from the Foreign Department about the agreement with the Rajah. The Governor General wishes Coles to discourage the Rajah from asking for a loan, which could not be granted in the present disturbed state of finances. See also 8988, 9007, 9124, 9211, 9230, 9232

9106. Aug 1861 Letter from Captain E Davidson, Bengal Engineers, Honorary Treasurer, Hospital Nurses Fund, Calcutta .Asks for subscriptions to the Fund. Printed enclosure. Note from Lady Canning. Copy of reply, sending 200 Rupees from the Governor General and 50 Rupees from the Private Secretary. See also 6152, 9134
9107. Aug 1861 Letter from Dr C Williams, Surgeon, 68th Madras Light Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for a larger allowance for his employment in Burma. See also 9085, 9091, 9097
9108. Aug 1861 Letter from Lieutenant J Johnstone, 1st Assam Light Infantry, on leave, Calcutta Asks for employment with the expedition which he understands will go from Assam into Yunan in China. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not intend to send any such expedition.
9110. Jun - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on deputation to Hyderabad, Madras. Reports his arrival at Madras, where the new finance system is working well, except in the Medical Department where there is a delay in the appointment of Examiner of Medical Accounts. Colonel Browne has been selected by Sir W Denison to accompany Temple to Hyderabad. Reductions in the Civil Establishments of the Districts in the Mofussil at Madras are progressing, and the re-organization of the Police. Comments on Police finances. Comments on the expenditure on Public Works. Mr Laing seemed anxious about the quota of 8 lacs which Madras is to contribute to the half million of local taxation. Suggests how the 8 lacs might be raised.
9111. Jun - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on deputation to Hyderabad, Madras. Notices the great accumulation of Native Infantry in the Northern Division of the Madras Presidency; observes that some think a reserve of 3 or 4 Native Infantry regiments are needed in the Presidency in case of trouble in Burma, but this cannot be admitted, as the force fixed by Government for Burma was considered by the local officers not only sufficient for all ordinary emergencies, but large enough to spare a column to march on Umeerapoora if necessary. 4 anna stamp
9111a. Jul 1861 - Feb 1862 Letter from Mr R Temple, on special duty, Bellary. Having seen a good deal of the Mysore Territory, comments on the features of the country, its capabilities, administration, judicial system, land revenue, civil police, roads, barracks, forests, coffee, beetul nut, Moturpha tax, want of uniformity of system, irrigation, Public Works Department. Reports an interview with the Rajah of Mysore, who is not competent to do much in the way of government or administration, is superstitious and much in the hands of Brahmins. Thinks there are more troops than are necessary in Mysore.
9112. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on deputation to Hyderabad, Bellary. Communicates General Coffin's views on the military reductions in Hyderabad. The barracks at Bellary are very good, but the hospital is most extravagant in style. 1/2 anna stamp. Endorsed: Governor General to Mr Temple dated 15 Oct 1861, Number 61
9113. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr J W Kaye, Secretary, Political and Secret Department, India Office, London. Sends a Bill of Lading for a case of Insignia of the Order of the Star of India (Bill no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Receipt by Mr Bayley for the case.
9114. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Rajah Rundheer Sing of Kupoorthulla, Landour. Was pleased with his letter from the Governor General in which he was addressed as Raj-e-Rajgan for the first time, and asks for his new title to be made generally known. Asks when he may come to Calcutta to pay his respects. Has applied through the Punjab Government for a Sunnud. Asks for whom the new order of India is intended. Copy of reply, the Governor General's movements are very uncertain, and Private Secretary cannot say positively whether he will leave India in Dec or 2 or 3 months later. His Excellency will gladly sanction any recommendation for a Sunnud made by Sir R Montgomery. The names of the KSIs are in the Gazette.

9116. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr D Templeton, Assistant Secretary, District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Acknowledges the Governor General's donation. Copy of earlier letter, sending 100 Rupees for the Society. See also 9115
9117 Aug 1861 Letter from Dr J M Honigberger, Calcutta. Offers to go to the Upper Provinces where he has heard cholera is raging in order to use his specific. Would guarantee that if he were allowed to inoculate, cholera would disappear in 8 days. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, the letter has been sent to the Home Department.

9119. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah. As his future employment in Nagode is very uncertain, asks for a transfer. Copy of reply, on Osborne's return the Governor General will consider his claims.
9120. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr F St C Williams, Extra Assistant Commissioner in Oudh, under suspension, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to explain his case. Encloses note from Mr Bayley. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not communicate with him except in writing. See also 9068
9121. Jun - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr A O Hume, Magistrate and Collector of Etawah, on leave, London. Says he has had an interview with Sir C Wood, but could not get any assistance from him in the matter of aid for the Etawah School. Comments on the selection of a Head Master. Hopes the Governor General will sanction a grant for the school.
9122. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on deputation to Hyderabad. Has received a cordial reception from Colonel Davidson, who though adhering strongly to his own views listens to the opinions of others. Expects they will agree in recommending military reductions (given in detail). Colonel Davidson and Colonel Browne both think the substitution of Madras troops for the Contingent quite impossible; Temple thinks it might be possible to a very limited extent. Is preparing a variety of reductions in Public Works. Hopes to give a review of the Civil expenditure of Berar showing prospect of a surplus for the Nizam. 1/2 anna stamp. 9126. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J C Brooke, Political Agent, Jeypore. Replies about Jeypore enamels commissioned for the Private Secretary, Lady Canning and Mrs Bayley. Regrets that the Jeypore Rajah is not to be decorated with the new order. Asks if there was any impression that Jeypore was under Oodeypore as a feudatory, they are quite separate. Has sent in his resignation of the Bheel Corps, and recommends Captain Annesley. The rain and the crops have been very good. The Maharajah shortly intends to open his school for Thakoors' children; his next move will be a municipal fund. Office copy of part of this letter. 9133. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Surgeon Major T Jerdon, 11th Madras Native Infantry, Thayet Myo. Asks to be allowed to accompany the Tibet Expedition as Surgeon. Copy of reply, his name is on the list for the Expedition, and a passport has been applied for for him.

9136. Aug 1861 Letter from Dr A Webb, Honorary Secretary, La Martiniere, Calcutta. Asks if the Governor General will preside at the next school anniversary. Copy of reply, the Governor General regrets he cannot accept.
9137. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr E H Lushington, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Says that Mr Eden is on leave at Darjeeling, and will probably join his appointment at the end of Aug.
9138. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr J N Morse, late Surgeon in the Steamer 'Pluto', Calcutta. Applies for back pay, and a gratuity or pension if his services are no longer required. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been sent to the Home Department.
9140. Aug 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J G Balmain, Madras Artillery, Temporary Additional Deputy Commissioner for Nagpore. Has given up the idea of leaving the service, and asks for a more permanent post. Copy of reply, request noted. See also 9019

9146. Aug 1861 Letter from Lieutenant C C Taylor, late 56th Native Infantry, Officiating Interpreter, Her Majesty's 42nd Highlanders, Almorah. Has received no reply to two letters to Major Bowie about the Pay Mastership at Cawnpore, and asks for information. Copy of reply, Bowie has sent a reply. There is no chance whatever of employment in the Political Department or in the Mysore Commission. See also 8801, 8971
9147. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Mr C B Saunders, Officiating Commissioner of Mysore, Yelwall. With reference to a protest which Major Clerk has sent to Government against his removal from the Astagram to the Bangalore Division, asks the Governor General to suspend judgment until Saunders' official reply to the protest has been received. Major Clerk had, despite orders of Government against such connections, continued his association with cotton planting. Copy of reply, the Governor General is too well aware of Saunders' high reputation to attach any credit to Clerk's insinuations. No orders have yet been passed.
