Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9151 to 9200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 92 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9101 to 9200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9152, 9155, 9156, 9163, 9165, 9168, 9175, 9178, 9179, 9180, 9182, 9187, 9192, 9194, 9196, and 9197 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9152. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah. Sends for the Governor General a copy of the notes which Captain Osborne left for Coles' guidance, by request of Osborne. Copy of reply, His Excellency wishes Coles to be told that Osborne's views on the conditions under which the Rewah coal mines should be worked must not be regarded as the Government view, but merely Osborne's own opinion. 9161. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr W Wells Lee, late Lieutenant, Her Majesty's Bengal European Infantry, Futtehgurh. Sends a Memorial asking that the money for his passage to England which he was compelled to forfeit owing to his wife's illness may be granted him for the support of his family. 9162. Aug 1861 Letter from Kunder Pepsur Sing Sareng, Rajah of Assam, Calcutta. Asks for an interview to pay his respects to the Governor General. Copy of reply, request refused. The Rajah should submit his business in writing to the Secretary to Government.
9163. Aug 1861 Letter from Colonel G St P Lawrence, Governor General's Agent, Rajpootana, Aboo. Asks to be informed of the Governor General's probable movements in the autumn. Hopes some of the Rajpootana chiefs will be selected for knighthood. Lieutenant Newall is preparing a resume of the past history of Rajpootana. Believes that in 1860 Major Eden forwarded to the Foreign Office reports from the different Agents of the Courts. Major Brooke's History of Meywar was published in 1859.

9165. Jul - Aug 1861 Letter from Colonel H Bruce, President, Police Commission, on special duty, Chittoor. He has been looking into Mr Robinson's Police. Bruce thought that a money limit had been imposed upon Madras, but that is not the case, and the new organization will, he fears, be more costly than was expected. Is going through several other Districts and then to Ootacamund to see Sir W Denison.
9166. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr G Loch, Judge, Sudder Dewanry Adawlut, on leave, Ootacamund. Writes for employment for his son Lieutenant J Loch, preferably in the Nagpore Commission. See also 9785, 9630
9167. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr G U Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. In reply, a vacancy as 1st class Assistant Commissioner will soon occur for Dr Young. Asks for information about the rules or the practice under which appointments are made to Oudh, for he believed that the nomination rested with the Chief Commissioner; the appointment of Lieutenant Ramsay and Dr Young shows that his belief is wrong. Is short of officers able to take charge of a District, and because of this has stopped the Oonao Settlement work for a short time. Copy of earlier letter about Dr A Young. 9168. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Says he cannot take Dr Young into the Commission without causing discontent; he could be appointed Conservator of Forests. Asks if there is any hope of an equilibrium of salaries; he will lose all his Civilians unless they can be made Commissioners after 12 years' service. Copy of earlier letter, about Dr A Young. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not appoint Young to the Punjab. Asks who is to accompany Pattiala to the Investiture at Allahabad on 1 Nov. 9175. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr W Edwards, Judge of Benares. Writes further to his memorandum on tobacco. Private Secretary is wrong to think that the climate of India is unsuitable for tobacco growing. Suggests the correspondence of 1829 between the Government of India and the Court of Directors may be called for, and thinks that the experiment of sowing American seed was highly satisfactory. 9180. Aug 1861 Letter from Major J R Wilson, Inspecting Post Master, Nagpore Division, Kamptee. Has discovered that a species of Cinchona is indigenous to the hilly tracts close to Ellichpore, and offers his services to report further on the subject, and on the other resources of that part of India. Copy of reply, inquiries have been made about the medical value of the plant he has discovered, and 'the bitter principle' yielded is so small as to be of no use. See also 9182

9198. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi. Sends with remarks a letter from Mr Courtenay asking for certain information about some state jewels belonging to the Maharajah of Gwalior which were stolen in 1857, with a view to their recovery from a person who is supposed to have them at Patiala. Copy of reply, sending some information from Major Meade. Sindia would give a reward for the recovery of some of his jewels (he lost 25 lacs worth). Mr Courtenay should write to Sindia, or to Major Meade. See also 9204, 9271, 9273
9199. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr J M G Cheke, indigo planter, Baucoorah. Believes that his brother resigned the service too precipitately, under domestic calamity, and asks the Private Secretary to help obtain time for consideration for his brother. Copy of reply, George Cheke has only resigned from his appointment, and not from the service. See also 9093
9200. Aug 1861 Letter from Captain G Hand, late Commander, Bengal Steamer 'Mhor', Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General, sends a Memorandum on the circumstance under which he returned to Calcutta from the Straits and asks for employment, or a gratuity or a pension. Five papers. Copy of reply, His Excellency has no time to grant an interview. He will consider the matter through the proper channel when it reaches him.
