Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9201 to 9250, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 93 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9201 to 9300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9204, 9205, 9211, 9212, 9218, 9220, 9222, 9223, 9235, 9236, 9238, 9239, 9242, 9244, 9246, and 9249 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

Asks for his application for the Joint Medical Charge at Simla to be cancelled, if the Governor General will confirm his temporary appointment to Dr Forsyth's office, to bring up statistical and sanitary arrears. 9205. Aug 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr G U Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner Lucknow. Informing him that Mr P Saunders will come to Oudh when he has completed his inquiries in the Doab. See also 9065, 9066
9206. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr E W Perry, Officiating Superintendent of Stationery, Calcutta. Asks for an audience to give his views on the working of the Stamp Act. Copy of reply, the Governor General is too busy to grant an audience; the Private Secretary would be glad to convey Mr Perry's views to the Governor General.
9207. Aug 1861 Letter from Messrs Percy, Douglas and Co Calcutta. Offer on certain terms to undertake the collection of tolls on three rivers on the Grand Trunk Road. Copy of reply, application should be made to the Bengal Government.
9208. Aug 1861 Copy of a letter to Captain G E Rose, Military Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief Calcutta. Asking him to ask the Commander-in-Chief if Private Secretary may have a copy of the grant conferring on the Commander-in-Chief the Star of India.
9209. Aug 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr G W Kellner, in charge of the Office of the Superintendent of Army Clothing, Calcutta. Thanking him for his Memorandum about the Clothing Agency.
9210. Aug 1861 Letter from Captain R Stewart, Superintendent of Cachar. Writes about his claims to a Brevet Majority. Copy of reply, the application will be considered when it reaches the Governor General officially. Governor General's Book No 1748; See also 8160
9211. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah. Sends copies of 2 letters on the question of royalties, and a road to the mines. Asks to be informed if his view of the case is in any way incorrect, so that on the question reopening, after the disposal of the Singrowlee Rajah's claim to release from confiscation he may know how to act. The Rewah Rajah is very anxious for a loan, and now asks for 3 lacs payable in 4 years. He has no other female relatives to marry off, and there is no probability of his having a family of his own. 9212. Aug 1861 Copy of a letter to Major A R E Hutchinson, Political Agent, Bhopal. Announcing the Governor General's dissatisfaction with his private report of the ceremony held for the announcement to the Secunder Begum, of the Queen's intention to appoint her to be a Knight of the Star of India. Hutchinson has given no satisfactory explanation of the refusal of the military officers to attend the ceremony. Endorsed: Seen by Colonel Durand. Governor General's Book No 2075; See also 9296

9216. Aug 1861 Letter from Mr J A Moreino, Clerk, General Treasury, Calcutta. Repeats his request for an appointment, and asks for an interview. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no employment to offer him. See also 7335, 9227
9217. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Captain E Danvers, late Commander, Steamer 'Jubboona', Kidderpore. Sends a Memorial stating his services, and complaining of being reduced from the command of a steamer to that of No 2 Barge. Three papers. Copy of reply, request for reinstatement or increased pay refused. There are many others who have suffered greater reductions of salary. See also 9240, 9241
9218. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Reports particulars of a cholera outbreak, more medical men are wanted. Sir S Cotton has made arrangements to move out his whole force, should their quarters become affected by the disease. Copy of this letter. Copy of reply, the Governor General is pleased with the measures taken. Sir Hugh Rose's investiture went off well. The Governor General will hold the investiture for native chiefs at Allahabad on 1 Nov, Scindia, Pattiala, the Rampoor man, and probably the Bhopal Begum attending. His Excellency wishes the chief to come with only a few followers. After the ceremony is over, he talks of holding an anti-female-infanticide meeting at Lucknow, and will then hurry back to Calcutta to go to Rangoon. He expects to be relieved by Lord Elgin in Feb. The excitement produced by the Nil Dorpun case is passing away, but the views of the Home Government are awaited with interest. Sir C Wood highly disapproves of the official who circulated the pamphlet, but Private Secretary thinks the rest of the story must have damaged Sir M Wells' reputation.

9220. Jul - Sep 1861 Letter from Mr J W Kaye, Secretary Political and Secret Department India Office. Sends a bill of lading for a case of insignia of the Star of India. Also a letter for Captain Smyth (Not enclosed.) Copy of reply, acknowledgement. The expedition under Colonel Sarell has been obliged to turn back. Governor General's Book No 2082
9221. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Captain R Jenkins, late 5th European Cavalry, Simla. Asks to be reappointed to the Political Department. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot hold out any prospect of employment in the political line to him.
9222. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on special service, Sholapore. Reports his movements. Gives an account of the Nizam Salar Jung, Shumshool, Comra and his 3 sons, and the state of their Government. Remarks on the Arab chiefs, who form a party in the State. Endorsed: Governor General to Mr Temple dated 15 Oct 1861 No 61.
9223. Jul - Sep 1861 Letter from Captain W J Eastwich, Member of the Indian Council, Westminster. At the request of Ressaldar Shere Singh, reports that the man is well, and wishes his family to be told this. The Sirdar has been well received in London, but he does not speak English, and very few officials speak Hindustani. There is no one connected with the India Office whose business it is to look after the natives of India when they come to England, and in consequence they fall into the hands of persons whose only object it is to make as much out of them as they can. Sir John Login found Shere Singh lodged over a beef shop. Fears that men in his situation will not leave England with a favourable impression. See also 9239
9224. Sep 1861 Letter from Baboo Joteendromohun Tagore, Honorary Secretary British Indian Association, Calcutta. Sends a Memorial from the Association with printed copies of two petitions of the Association to the Legislative Council about the Criminal Procedure Bill. Letter and papers no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his papers have been forwarded to the Home Department.
9225. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Mr J Audall, Calcutta. Complains that he did not receive an admission card to the Investiture ceremony at Government House. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Major Bowie.

9234. Sep 1861 Copy of a letter to Captain T H Tronson, P and O Company's Office, Calcutta. Sending a Bill of Lading for a case of Insignia of the Star of India. See also 9220
9235. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Maharajah Man Singh, Lucknow. Says that owing to the cotton seeds having been kept in the Lucknow Post Office for one and a half months without his knowledge, they all rotted, and a very small quantity has grown. Has been trying to interest the Talookdars in the suppression of infanticide in Oudh, and sends copy of the proceedings of the Talookdar Committee on the subject, (in the vernacular; office translation enclosed). Asks if the Governor General intends going up country, and where he should be in attendance. Copy of reply, His Excellency is much pleased with the paper about infanticide, and the steps taken by the Maharajah to suppress this barbarous crime among his countrymen. His Excellency will be in the North West Provinces at the end of Oct and the Maharajah will be informed of the time and place where the Governor General will receive him. His Excellency is sorry to hear of the loss of the cotton seed, and hopes the Maharajah will not be discouraged. See also 9297, 9330, 9352
9236. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Assistant Surgeon E D Evezard, Civil Surgeon, Masulipatam. Says that in 1857 he reported to Government his discovery of argentiferous galena in Mergui. Writes further to a Government order on the subject, which was not carried out. Copy of reply, the Commissioner of the Tenasserim Provinces has been asked to make a report.
9237. Sep 1861 Letter from Captain F R Williamson, late Commander, Government Steamer 'Mechanic', Calcutta .Sends an appeal against his reduction in the Service; asks to be reinstated, or saved from so great a reduction as half his salary. Printed testimonials. Copy of reply, His Excellency acknowledges his good service, and the hardship of his case, but the reductions of salary made in the case of Williamson and 3 other Commanders are part of a general scheme, and the Governor General can make no exceptions. 9238. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr C Henfry, Contractor, Eastern Bengal Railway, Calcutta. Asks for the return of a letter from Count Cavour on his behalf. Copy of reply, the Governor General has much pleasure in complying with this request, and placing in Henfrey's hands a letter so honourable to him, and one which has now acquired a melancholy interest. 9242. Aug- Sep 1861 Letter from Mr A H Prichard, Acting Editor, Delhi Gazette, Agra. Sends copy of an anonymous letter to him warning the public of a contemplated rebellion among the native Army in early October. The plan is to create a disturbance first in Oudh headed by Bene Madho, and assisted by the King of Nepal, so as to divert attention from the Punjab where the great insurrection is to begin immediately afterwards. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement. The letter had already reached His Excellency through Brigadier Troup. If the Benee Mudhoo mentioned is the man of Shunkurpoor in Oudh, he is supposed to have died in the Terai, as was reported in 1859.

9246. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Mr E L Brandreth, Officiating Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Simla. Believing that he will have to accompany the Rajah of Patiala, asks when and where the Knights of the Star of India are to be invested. Copy of reply, the ceremony will be at Allahabad on 1 Nov. It is likely, though not certain, that Brandreth will have to accompany the Rajah. See also 9421
