Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9301 to 9350, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 94 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9301 to 9350’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9303, 9307, 9308, 9311, 9314, 9319, 9320, 9328, 9329, 9330, 9334, 9336, 9337, 9339, 9340, 9345, 9347, and 9348 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9302. Sep 1861 Letter from Pundit Ishree Pursad, Deputy Collector, Jounpore. In reply, wishes an interview to obtain letters of introduction from the Private Secretary to the Governor General's Agents in Rajpootana and Central India, to enable him to obtain signatures of the native princes to the contemplated address to Lord Canning. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary refuses to grant letters of the kind requested, and therefore an interview is unnecessary. See also 9178, 9252
9303. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Mr E B Cowell, Honorary Secretary Asiatic Society, Calcutta. Conveys the thanks of the Society for the Governor General's donation of two sculptures. Copy of earlier letter, presenting the statues, found by Colonel Yule near Jubbulpore.

9307. Sep 1861 Copy of a letter to Major General Sir R Birch, Secretary to Government Military Department Calcutta. Asking him to settle speedily the question of Dr Campbell's request to be allowed to retire on 1 Jan with a pension of £700 a year. See also 9298, 9304, 9387
9308. Sep 1861 Letter from Major S R Tickell, Deputy Commissioner Moulmein. Sends a Memorandum, vocabulary, and photograph (none of these enclosed) of the Andamanese, lately in his charge. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement. Endorsed: photograph given to Lady Canning.
9309. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr C West, late Inspecting Post Master, Cannanore. Asks for money. Six letters, various dates.
9310. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr W R Baillie, late Superintendent of Supplies, Carogola, Chandernagore. Sends a Memorial, asking to be allowed the full salary of his late appointment, etc. (Memorial no longer enclosed.) Copy of reply, orders on his Memorial will come from the Military Department.
9311. Sep 1861 Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner of Simla, on leave, Sreenuggur, Cashmere. Reports that he has obtained possession of Mr A Schlagintweit's Notebook, and also what is stated to be his skull. The man who brought these from Kashgur gives exactly the same account of his death as the printed narratives of Mahumed Ameen and Kashmiri Abdulla. Lord William Hay has written to Mr R Schlagintweit. At Sreenuggur the shawl merchants are hard up, and shawls could be got at 30% under value. See also 9336
9312. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr J G Davidson, late Senior Indexer of the Office of Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Having been out of work because of the abolition of the Marine Superintendent's Office, asks for a pension, or some alms. (Letter no longer enclosed.) Copy of reply, his letter has been sent to Captain Reddie.
9313. Sep 1861 Letter from Dr S G Chuckerbutty, Calcutta. Sends a copy of a paper written by him on Native Education, from a psychological point of view. (Not enclosed) Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
9314. Sep 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Bruce, Secretary and Member of the Indian Police Commission, Ballygunge. Forwards a Memorandum on the Madras Police. (Printed copy enclosed) Asks to be allowed to send copies to various people. Will send further reports.
9315. Sep 1861 Letter from Moonshee Abdoor Ruzak, Madrissa College, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to accompany the Governor General on his Tour as Moonshee. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary is not aware that a Moonshee is required; he could apply to the Foreign Department.
9316. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Captain T Keyes, 4th class Executive Engineer, Public Works Department Delhi. Applies for political employment, mentioning Ulwar. Testimonial. Note from Colonel Durand.
9317. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr W Theobold, Prothonotary, and Clerk of the Crown Supreme Court, Calcutta. Sends an application for one of the Judgeships in the High Court. Copy of reply, his name will be considered.
9318. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr P C Augier, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, request refused.
9319. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on special service, Nagpore. Has not yet received a reply to his telegram asking if he is to receive instructions. Does not know where to go to. Is obtaining information about Nagpore. Copies of three services messages, about Temple's movements. Telegraph Messages sent No 917, 922; Telegraph Message received No 1341
9320. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr H Cope, Umritsur. Thanks the Governor General for the gift of land. Presumes that no answer has yet been received about the silk sent to London. Says that cotton is being exported by his firm. If the Indus route were in proper working order the quantity of goods sent southward would soon be doubled and trebled. He has begun mulberry cultivation along the Baree Doab Canal. Copy of reply, with remarks upon the cotton trade. Private Secretary is sorry there has been a delay over the silk; the Governor General did not know to whom to send it, but it has now been sent to the Private Secretary's brother in the Board of Trade. 9321. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr C U Aitchison, Under Secretary to Government Foreign Department Calcutta. Says that the two other sets of Insignia have been received and given in charge of the Superintendent of the Toshekhana.
9322. Sep 1861 Copy of a letter to Mr F Lincoln, Extra Assistant Commissioner Lucknow. Promotions in the Commission are only given on the recommendation of the Chief Commissioner. His request is refused. Governor General's Book No 2108; See also 6632
9323. Sep - Nov 1861 Letter from Lieutenant C Dodd, Deputy Collector, Kotree in Sinde. In reply, says it would not be to his advantage to accept the post of Assistant Resident at Nepal, but if any of his duties in Nepal were to be of a detective nature, looking for rebels, he would sacrifice his prospects in Sinde for the office. Would prefer some other political post, the salary of which more nearly approaches his present salary. Copy of earlier letter, asking him if he would like the post in Nepal. 9324. Sep 1861 Letter from Senjee Pulney Andy, Madras. Says he went to England to compete for an Assistant Surgeoncy in the Army, but was told on the examination day that natives of India were not eligible for the General Military Medical Service. Was told he would be employed in India. Asks for a Civil Surgeoncy in Bengal. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, the letter will be considered in the Military Department.
9326. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Pleader of the Sudder Court, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to say a few words about the appeals concerning the Durbhungah Estates in Tirhoot, and the case of the Ex-Rajah of Porahaut. Copy of reply, asking to submit details in writing. See also 9348
9327. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr H P Keighly, late Captain 49 Madras Native Infantry Calcutta. Sends a letter complaining of the delay in paying him his share of Prize money, from the Burmese War of 1852-18533. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, his letter has been sent to the Military Department. See also 9530
9328. Sep 1861 Letter from Colonel H Bruce, President, Police Commission, Ballygunge. Gives information about the sum of money written off by the Madras Government on account of preliminary Police expenses, with comments. Returns the Nagpore papers (not enclosed) with comments. Sends a Memorandum of points upon which instructions might be given to the Punjab Government. Sir R Montgomery should be telegraphed about Bruce's arrival. See also 9329
9329. Sep 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. Asks who should accompany the Puttiala Rajah to the investiture, suggests Mr Brandreth. Copy of reply, the Governor General will write about the investiture. Gives details of the Tour. Comments on Temple's and Bruce's tours. Mr Saunders has sent a very good Report about cotton; comments by Private Secretary. The Bishop of Calcutta has unfortunately been drawn into the interminable indigo squabble.
9330. Sep 1861 Letter from Rajah Man Singh, Shahgunge. Asks if the Governor General intends to go to Allahabad on 1 Nov and if the Private Secretary will accompany him. Copy of reply, giving information about the Governor General's movements. See also 9235, 9352
9331. Sep 1861 Letter from Major W D Dickson, Assistant General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoitee, Agra. As by the Bombay G G Order of 29 Aug he has been admitted into the Staff Corps and promoted to the rank of Major, hopes his present allowances will be increased in proportion. Copy of reply, His Excellency is unable to understand on what grounds the request is made. See also 9389
9332. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr R S Ellis, Income Tax Commissioner Madras. Asks to be appointed Judicial Commissioner of Mysore. Copy of reply, there is no probability of a vacancy.
9333. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr J R Carnac, Judge of Ghazepore. Asks to be allowed to recover the amount wrongly deducted from his salary during his leave. Certificate enclosed. Copy of reply, he should apply through the Punjab Government.
9334. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Ireland. Makes some remarks on the Civil Service Bill, and says that Colonel Durand's appointment to the Foreign Office is considered a slur upon the Bengal Civil Service. If Bengal could produce no fit officer for the post, Anderson of Bombay would have answered well. Has not received the official letter mentioned in the Governor General's last letter to him at Bombay. The 14th and 86th are asking if anything is to be given for Gwalior. Office memorandum.
9335. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr S H Robinson, Secretary Calcutta Sailors' Home. Asks for the Governor General's subscription. Copy of reply, sending 200 Rupees. See also 7754
9336. Aug - Sep 1861 Letter from Mr R de Schlagintweit, Bavaria. Having learnt from Mr Grote that a Mission was organizing for Central India, suggests his brother Emil be attached to the Mission, for physical and philological ethnography, which would enable him also to obtain information about his late brother. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, his letter has been forwarded to the Foreign Department. The application for passports for Captain Smyth's expedition was not successful, and the expedition has been given up. Gives an extract from Lord William Hay's letter about the death of Adolphe Schlagintweit, and the discovery of his skull and Notebook. See also 9311, 9746

9339. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on special duty, Nagpore. Gives information on the following points connected with cotton: whether the future route of Berar and Nagpore cotton is to be by the Godavery Navigation, or by the Bombay and Nagpore Railway; what Manchester should do about sending out Agents, and what is required for a contract to give security to European capitalists for advances to ryots: the feasibility of European capitalists obtaining land in Berar and Nagpore for the establishment of cotton estates. 9340. Sep 1861 Letter from Colonel Sir R Shakespear, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore. Sends a letter from Major Meade about the corruption of Sindia's officials generally, and particularly in the Ghattizar Dacoity affair, and Sindia's own participation. Meade remarked it was difficult to write officially with sufficient minuteness on such delicate matters.

9345. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner of Delhi. Asks the Governor General to direct the Surveyor General to send a complete set of maps, mounted, to the Institute at Delhi. Believes that a grand Exhibition of products, arts and industries of India would be of great benefit. At Umritsur a native Cotton Company has started, and Oil Press Company is beginning, and circulars are going round for a Silk Company. Copy of reply, he will be sent the maps. See also 9363
9346. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, Fresident, Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Sends two more testimonials in favour of Mr A Wilson (not enclosed, neither is Balfour's letter). Copy of reply, all Mr Wilson's papers have been sent to Colonel Yule. See also 9377, 9397, 9457
9347. Sep 1861 Letter from Mr T Oldham, Superintendent of Geology, Calcutta. Reports Mr Medlicott's arrival; on his way down. Medlicott went over all the records relating to cotton for the North West Provinces available at Allahabad. Perhaps the Governor General may wish to give Medlicott further instructions before he begins to examine the records in Calcutta.
