Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9351 to 9400, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 94 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9301 to 9400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9352, 9357, 9365, 9368, 9375, 9379, 9380, 9382, 9383, 9384, 9387, 9390, 9391, 9393, 9394, and 9398 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9352. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Rajah Mann Singh, Shahgunge, Oudh. Returns thanks for the Governor General's approval of his papers on Female Infanticide in Oudh. Asks for information about the Governor General's and Private Secretary's movements in the North West Provinces. Hopes to be more successful with cotton in future; has cultivated about 20 Beegahs of cotton. See also 9235, 9330

9367. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Mr G Wagentrieber, Agent of Moulvie Fuddeer ood deen formerly Sudderr ool Sudderr of Delhi, Delhi. Sends a petition from his client asking for restoration of the confiscated part of his estates, and for an allowance for his maintenance. Petition no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, the petition has been transferred to the Foreign Department.
9368. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Murree. States that on 11 Jun 1860 in letter number 365 the Punjab Government made a full report on the redemption of the Land Tax. Copy of reply, the report was received. 9369. Oct 1861 Letter from Captain J Reddie, Secretary to Government Marine Department Calcutta. Asks if he may temporarily put the Steamer 'Arracan' under the orders of Captain Fraser, superintending the building of the Alquada Lighthouse. Copy of reply, the Governor General has no objection.

9382. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Mr P Saunders, senior, Commissioner to examine and report on the cultivation of cotton in the North West Provinces, Lucknow. Sends a note from Mr Gubbins complaining that be sends letters after Saunders all over the country. Saunders does not receive them. Asks for information about the way in which he should distribute his reports. Is about to begin travelling through Oudh. Note from Mr Grey. 9384. Sep - Oct 1861 Letter from Mr G U Yule, Officiating Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Returns Sir B Frere's letter about Dr Young (not enclosed). Says that Shere Sing's message was given to his family. Remembers reading about the general meeting on marriage expenses at Umritsur; they are very heavy in Oudh also, and perhaps the original cause of female infanticide. Sends a letter from Maun Sing on the subject. Asks if the Talookdars are to meet the Governor General. Copy of reply, he may summon the Talookdars to Lucknow to meet the Governor General in Nov. 9386. Oct 1861 Letter from Rajah Kalikrishna Bahadoor, Calcutta. Sends cards of invitation to Nautches, and asks to be allowed to wait upon the Governor General with a similar card (Card enclosed). Copy of reply, thanking him for the cards. His Excellency regrets that owing to the great pressure of work he is unable at present to grant an audience.

Is detained at Lucknow by heavy rain. The Khureef crops are very good, and the promise of the Rubbee has never been equalled. See also 9065, 9382
9391. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr P Temple, on special duty, Nagpore. Has not yet received his instructions. Asks to be allowed to be present at Allahabad on 1 Nov. Makes suggestions about the Godavery project. The Pegu revenues have risen to 53 lacs, being more than 3 lacs in excess of calculations, suggests the Frontier customs duties at Meeaday be reconsidered. Asks for his services to be placed at the disposal of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, and asks for two months privilege leave.
