Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9451 to 9500, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 95 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9401 to 9500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9453, 9459, 9464, 9468, 9471, 9472, 9473, 9476, 9479, 9486, 9487, 9488, 9489, 9490, and 9494 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9457. Oct 1861 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, President, Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Mr Wilson to Mr Peachey which shows how favourably the Chief Engineer at Hyderabad has viewed Mr Wilson's case. Believes that if Wilson were transferred to the Godavery, he would do good service there. See also 9346, 9377, 9397
9458. Oct 1861 Letter from Dr A Solomon, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General. Copy of reply, the Governor General is too busy to grant an interview. Private Secretary will be happy to convey Solomon's business to His Excellency.
9459. Oct 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel A G Goodwyn, Under Secretary to Government Public Works Department Calcutta. Sends a letter from Colonel Yule at Allahabad, warning him that the Governor General's journey to Allahabad may be slower than usual.
9460. Oct 1861 Letter from Rajah Ram Chunder Singh, Calcutta. Asks the Governor General to an entertainment. Describes his arrangements, and lists the guests. Copy of reply, the Viceroy is leaving Calcutta for the Upper Provinces. See also 9749

9462. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr J Goodeve, barrister, Calcutta. Applies for the post of Barrister Judge of the new High Court of Calcutta. Copy of reply, his application will be considered.
9463. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr W R Pogson, Deputy Collector, Hoogly. Sends copies of testimonials and asks for an appointment connected with the Paper Currency etc. Papers not enclosed. Copy of reply, his papers have been transferred to the Financial Department.
9464. Oct 1861 Letter from Moonshee Mohun Lall, Indore. Hopes for a decision on his case. Almost all the natives feel sorrow at the departure of the Governor General from India. See also 8777
9465. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr C H Lushington, Secretary to Government Financial Department Calcutta. Says he has not yet received the draft Resolution prepared by Sir B Frere.
9466. Oct 1861 Letter from Major H F M Boisragon, Commandant of the 4th Sikh Infantry, Abbottabad. Asks for the Private Secretary's aid in obtaining his transfer from the Hazara Gurkha Battalion to the 4th Sikhs.
9467. Oct 1861 Letter from Captain J Francis, Calcutta. Asks permission to go to Suez on the 'Feroze'. Copy of reply, request refused. See also 9480
9468. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr H D Fergusson, Commissioner of Patna. Believes strongly that it will not be practicable for Lady Canning to make a trip from Dehree to Rhotas in November. Copy of reply, thanking him for his information. Lady Canning has not come to Allahabad, however, but remained at Darjeeling.
9469. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Mr E J Howard, Director of Public Instruction, Bombay, Kirkee. Sends the subscription list of Dr Haug's book on Zoroaster, and asks how many copies the Governor General will take. Copy of reply, he will take 5 copies. See also 7871
9470. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Captain T J H Keyes, 17th Madras Native Infantry, late of the Punjab Public Works Department Loodiana. Asks for employment in Oudh or Mysore. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
9471. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr H Cope, Umritsur. Acknowledges receipt of the official announcement about the grant of land. The export of cotton from Umritsur continues. Expects to form a small silk company at Umritsur. Some of the native dealers are considering a cotton cultivating company.
9472. Oct 1861 Letter from Rundheer Sing, Rajah of Kuppoorthalla. Says the bearer of the letter, Lalla Bunna Mull, will explain the purpose of his visit to the Private Secretary.
9473. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr G U Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asks about arrangements for the Governor General's visit. Copy of reply.
9474. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Mr T Prichard, Editor, Delhi Gazette, Agra. Asks for drafts or copies of the Governor General's speeches at the approaching installation. Copy of reply, a special Gazette will be issued, and Prichard will be sent a copy.
9475. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Mr C R Coles, Officiating Political Agent, Rewah. Writes further to his wish for a permanent appointment. Asks if he may apply for the construction of the Residency, and if the plans and estimates should be reduced. Captain Osborne's estimate was 29,978 Rupees. Copy of reply, about his future employment, which the Governor General will consider when the time comes. See also 8313, 9119
9476. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Ali Bahadoor Ex Nawab of Banda, Indore. Asks for permission to go to Agra to see his sick mother. Asks also to be allowed to meet the Governor General at Allahabad, to present several letters and a silver plate given to him by Major Scott for having saved that officer's life and other Christians during the Mutiny, and to present a petition about his misfortunes. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot see the Ex Nawab. His application to go to Agra should be made through the Governor General's Agent. Telegraph Message received No 1358; See also 9629

9478. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Mr C H Carlisle, Head Examiner, Chief Engineer's Office North West Provinces, Allahabad. Asks for redress in a case over a debt. Copy of reply, he should appeal to a higher court, the Governor General will not interfere in the case.
9479. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Mr C B Thornhill, Commissioner of Allahabad. Asks if Government would sanction 3,000 Rupees for photographs of tribes in the Allahabad Division. Copy of reply, the Governor General thinks it impossible to sanction so large a sum. Private Secretary thinks the work should be done, without sanction obtained beforehand.
9480. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Mr G Landseer, Benares. Writes on behalf of Captain Francis, who applies for permission to go to Suez on the 'Feroze' when she goes for Lord Elgin. Copy of reply, the request is refused. Later letter from Landseer. See also 9467

9483. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Captain J D Couper, Deputy Superintendent Central Stud, Poosah. Returns thanks for the Private Secretary's letter. Copy of reply, asking him to be in Calcutta by 10 Nov.
9484. Nov 1861 Copy of a letter to Colonel H Drummond. Regretting that the Governor General will not be able to grant him an audience.
9486. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department Calcutta. Sends an example of the form used when the Governor General notified a day of Thanksgiving. Four printed papers, relating to 1859 declaration.
9487. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr F Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares. Has despatched the Paris paper and the copy of the address, which the Governor General wished to see. See also 9495
9488. Oct 1861 Letter from Mr P Saunders, senior, Special Cotton Commissioner Seetapore. Returns thanks for the copy of the Resolution sent him, with comments. The measures proposed by Government for the sale of Waste Lands and the Redemption of Land Tax are very different from those deprecated in his Report. See also 9453
9489. Oct 1861 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. States that Colonel Bruce left with a wrong impression on several points, about which he has now been informed. Bruce condemned the Leia District having been excluded from the new Police, but there is no longer any Leia District. Bruce is not correct in saying the Punjab Police will cost 32 lacs and more, the cost will not exceed 2,864,080 Rupees There is no River Police as supposed by Colonel Bruce. The Canal Chowkedars and the Regular Police cannot be united as Bruce supposes, for the reasons given.

9491. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Mr R M King, Officiating Deputy Commissioner Pertabgurh. Says his brother, to whom the Governor General kindly promised a post in Oudh, has been promoted in China, and has given up the idea of coming to India. Begs that Captain Stanley may be told that not a single tiger skin fell to the writer's share during the year. See also 8083, 8136
9492. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from the Honourable H B Devereux, Civil Service on leave, Ootacamund. Understanding that Colonel Davidson is going home, asks to be considered for this and other vacancies which may arise. Anticipates that the orders of Sir C Wood on his paper will be to cancel what was done, and to put him in as good a position as he was in 1859. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has not heard that Davidson is to leave Hyderabad.
9493. Oct - Nov 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C Hervey, General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoitee, Jubbulpore. Explains the circumstances under which he relieved Lieutenant H Fraser, his Assistant for Nagpore, to enable him to accept a post in the Police, and asks if he should nominate a successor. Four papers. Copy of reply, he need not nominate another officer. See also 10139
