Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9551 to 9600, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 96 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9501 to 9600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9556, 9559, 9560, 9565, 9572, 9574, 9575, 9583, 9592, 9593, 9594, 9595, 9596, 9597, and 9598 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9554. Nov 1861 Letter from Colonel H Bruce, President, Police Commission, Calcutta. Gives the dates of the departures of the steamers for Rangoon, and asks if he is to wait for His Excellency at Rangoon or Moulmein. Copy of reply, he must use his own judgement, as to which steamer to take.
9555. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr A M Dowleans, Calcutta. Sends specimens of embroidery to be shown to Lord and Lady Canning (not enclosed).
9556. Nov 1861 Letter from Dr T C Jerdon, Calcutta .Asks for an order to be issued that his special duty began on 29 Sep. Comments on orders for his work on Natural History.
9557. Nov 1861 Letter from Major A R Thornhill, 1st Assistant to the Resident at Hyderabad. Sends copies of testimonials. See also 9536
9558. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr R Knight Editor of the Times of India, Bombay. Asks for the post of Commissioner of Currency, if such an office is created. Copy of reply, His Excellency does not expect such a post to be created.
9559. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr T D Forsyth, Commissioner of Lahore. Is surprised to find his name strongly censured in the Government Resolution on the Lucknow Note case, before he had received any notification that he was even being tried. Sends a printed statement about his share in the purchase of Government Paper. Asks that Government will allow it to be made known publicly that the inquiry about his note transaction was quite independent of any investigation into the affair in which Major Carnegie was implicated. Sends a note from Sir R Montgomery and copy of a note from Mr Schalch to Mr Currie. Copy of reply, his Memorandum will be considered officially. 9563. Nov 1861 Copy of a letter to Major C V Bowie, Government House. Asking for copies of some Gazettes which the Governor General requires; His Excellency does not want to mutilate the Gazette volumes in the Private Secretary 's Office.
9564. Nov 1861 Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel J Becher, Calcutta. Saying that the Governor General has no objection to Edwardes looking at any letters in the Private Secretary's Office from Sir Henry Lawrence during the Siege of Lucknow.
9565. Nov 1861 Copy of a letter to Colonel G Balfour, Calcutta. Stating that the Governor General would be glad to have a complete set of Balfour's Reports indexed. His Excellency does not require a set of his Departmental Orders, though he would like to have any of special interest.
9566. Nov 1861 Letter from the Reverend C E Driberg, missionary, Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Tollygunge. Sends an appeal for subscription towards rebuilding the church at Jhanjra. Appeal not enclosed. Copy of reply, request refused. See also 9668
9569. Nov 1861 Letter from Messrs Pharoah and Co Proprietors, Athenaeum Press, Madras. Sends an account to the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, asking for explanation. See also 9737
9570. Nov 1861 Letter from Captain R N Taylor, Madras Staff Corps, Madras. Asks for various appointments. Copy of reply, he should apply to the heads cf the Departments concerned. Governor General's Book No 2189; See also 9734
9572. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr R H Davies, Secretary to Government of the Punjab, Lahore. Says that when he wrote from Jummoo he did not know that the Governor General had not sanctioned his going to deliver the Star, and explains. Believes the Maharajah's rule is creditable to him, and that the visits of Europeans are acceptable. Has heard that the Maharajah in Durbar frequently expresses his dependence upon the British. He is willing to make improvements, and has an English mechanic, and is making a steam engine. The Maharajah says he will make a bridge over the Chenat, and improve the Bunihal route. Copy of reply, the Governor General realises that it is not Davies' fault that he went to Cashmere instead of Sir Robert. His Excellency is glad Davies went, for the ceremony seems to have been very successful. The Governor General's party is about to go to Pegu, but is delayed by the alarming illness of Lady Canning, who caught a malarious fever from passing through the Purneah District to and from Darjeeling. 9574. Nov 1861 Letter from Rajah Rundheer Singh of Kupperthulla. Asks when he may come to Calcutta to pay his respects to the Governor General. Sends a Memorandum, asking for a Sunnud, investment with special powers for the management of his Oudh estates, or an exchange of those estates, and for recognition of his title of Raj-i-Rajgan. Copy of reply, His Excellency will be happy to see him in January or early February.

9576. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr J M Melany, Honorary Secretary Regatta, Calcutta. Thanks the Governor General for his patronage of the Regatta. Asks for subscription. 9577 Nov 1861. Copy of a letter to Colonel H Bruce. Informing him that he should await the Governor General's arrival at Rangoon. He should inquire into the retention of the Sapper Battalion, the cause of the Pegu accounts not having been sent in, and Ordnance buildings.
9578. Nov 1861 Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel H Yule. Saying that it is almost certain that the Governor General will be unable to visit the works on the Godavery, and doubtful if he will be able to go to Rajamundry. He will probably give up the trip to the Madras Coast altogether. See also 9560

9587. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Colonel G St P Lawrence, Governor General's Agent for Rajpootana, Camp, Serohie. Suggests Lieutenant E Y Walcot, late 57th Native Infantry as Officiating Assistant Agent in place of Captain Newall. He has now only 2 Assistants. Captain Hamilton will go to Bikaneer and Jeysulmere, Jeypore and Tonk, to settle boundary disputes. Copy of reply, the Governor General is unable to appoint Walcot, who has no special claims, but has appointed Lieutenant C Taylor, 56th Native Infantry. See also 9607, 9615, 9645, 9647

Expresses sorrow at the death of Lady Canning, and sends details of Lady Canning's health during her journey down from the Hills. Asks if he should come to Calcutta to make arrangement for opening the new Councils. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of earlier letter, telling Mr Grant of the death of Lady Canning.
