Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9601 to 9650, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 97 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9601 to 9700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9606, 9608, 9614, 9616, 9626, 9629, 9635, 9638, and 9639 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9602. Nov 1861 Letter from Major J B Dennys, Officiating Deputy Commissioner, Saugor. Writes about his claim for employment in the Central India Commission. Enclosed is a letter from Mr Cocks. See also 9413, 9614
9603. Nov 1861 Copy of a letter to Messrs Hunter and Co Calcutta. Asking for a carriage and pair to take boxes and papers for the Governor General to Barrackpore.
9604. Nov 1861 Letter from Captain E B Clay, Commandant, Military Police at Seonee. Asks for a Cantonment Joint Magistracy. Copy of reply, there are only one or two such posts in the Governor General's gift. He should apply to the Lieutenant Governors.
9605. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr G Richardson, sculptor, Eastern Bengal Railway, Barrackpore. Submits a scheme for a monument to the late Countess Canning in one of the Calcutta churches. Copy of reply, Private Secretary does not think it advisable to lay this letter before the Governor General.
9606. Nov 1861 Letter from the Honourable Sir H B E Frere, Member of the Supreme Council of India, Calcutta. Reports arrangements to take news of Lady Canning's illness to England. 9615. Nov 1861 Letter from Captain E St George, Officiating Secretary to the Board of Examiners, Calcutta. Accepts with thanks the post of Officiating 1st Assistant to the Agent at Rajpootana. Is disappointed however at returning to Rajpootana in a worse position than the one he vacated some months ago. Copy of earlier letter, offering him the post. See also 9587, 9648
9616. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from the Reverend C Sloggett, chaplain of Lahore. Returns thanks for the letter of 25 Nov. He was not aware that Mr Forsyth would submit a personal statement. Copy of earlier letter, assuring him that no apology was needed for his letter. The Governor General has heard from Mr Forsyth, and the matter will be disposed of officially. 9617. Nov 1861 Letter from the Honourable C Beadon, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. In the event of a Small Cause Court being established at Bangalore, recommends Mr G E Cower of the Madras Small Cause Court, for the Judgeship. Letter from Mr Cower to Mr Beadon
9618. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from the Honourable C Beadon, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. Recommends his son Lieutenant Cecil Beadon, Adjutant of the 2nd Central India Horse as Assistant Commissioner in Oudh, and his son Lieutenant Richard Beadon as Adjutant of the 2nd Central India Horse. States their services etc. Copy of reply, the Governor General will look favourably on his application, but there are some promises to be fulfilled first.
9620. Nov 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H L Thuillier, Surveyor General, Calcutta. Sends a copy of Major Scott's map of the Madras Presidency (not enclosed).
9621. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr C J Erskine, Member of the Legislative Council of India for Bombay, Calcutta. With reference to an allusion to himself in the Friend of India, wishes Lord Canning to be told he had no communication on the subject with anyone connected with the paper. To Sir B Frere.

9625. Nov 1861 Letter from Mr F R Boyce, Assistant Secretary to Government of Bengal Public Works Department, Calcutta. Sends a copy of the selection No 38 from the records of the Government of Bengal in Public Works Department about a sanatorium on Mount Parisnath. (Not enclosed).
9626. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Commissioner of Nagpore, Jubbulpore. Supposes that the death of Lady Canning delayed the publication of the Resolution amalgamating the Saugor Districts with Nagpore in the Gazette. Has asked Mr Pearson about coming to Jubbulpore as Judicial Commissioner. Will write to the Punjab for a Secretary, and for a Divisional Commissioner. Mr Temple is expected very shortly. Asks for a schedule of salaries referred to in the Resolution of 11 Nov. Copy of reply, he will hear from the Governor General. He should forward to the Private Secretary a list of officers suggested for the new Commission, so that all may be published at once in the Gazette. The Governor General does not wish him to apply to the Punjab for a Commissioner. Private Secretary congratulates Elliot on his appointment as Chief Commissioner. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Mr W Grey, Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta .Reports the return of Dr Anderson from Java, he has been very successful in bringing cinchona plants with him. He will go to Madras by the next steamer. Anderson believes some plants should be kept in Calcutta until his return from Madras, when he will transport them to the Kashia Hills. See also 9636

Asking the Lieutenant Governor not to name officers for junior civil employ, as the Governor General wishes the nomination to rest with him.
