Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9651 to 9700, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 97 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9601 to 9700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9652, 9653, 9655, 9657, 9663, 9665, 9667, 9669, 9672, 9678, 9683, 9686, 9688, 9690, 9693, 9694, 9696, and 9697 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9653. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Yule, Secretary to Government Public Works Department, Calcutta. Sends a few lines of blank verse about Lady Canning (Printed).
9654. Dec 1861 Letter from Mr W H McGowan, Post Master, Calcutta. Says that no English letters came by the Bombay Express, and the packets contained only newspapers, amongst which there were none for Government House.
9655. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on special duty, Jubbulpore. Reports his arrival at Jubbulpore. Colonel Elliot proposes to submit his Report from Nagpore. Asks if he (Temple) is to return to Calcutta later, and if he may do so by the Godavery. Elliot seems to think that the military expenditure in the Saugor and Nerbudda territories is beyond local requirements. Endorsed: answered in negative by Telegram. 9656. Dec 1861 Letter from the Reverend C W Cahusac, chaplain of Chunar. Asks if he may occupy one of the Barrackpore Park bungalows tor a short time, owing to the state of his wife's health. Copy of reply, request refused. His Excellency resides there himself much of the time, and wishes his privacy undisturbed.
9657. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Captain P Maxwell, Deputy Commissioner Punjab, Googaira. Is deeply grieved that he has been publicly censured, and debarred the Staff Corps, with Lieutenant Orchard and Lieutenant Hare, for having addressed the Adjutant General's Department in an objectionable tone on the Staff Corps, and prays for mercy for the two Lieutenants who acted upon his recommendation. Asks for a mitigation of his punishment. Has written officially. Copy of reply, His Excellency appreciates the proper spirit in which he wrote, but regrets that he cannot hold out any hopes of a reversal of the orders on the case in question. In addition to the tone of the communication in question, he is guilty of the grave military crime of combination. See also 9818

9659. Oct - Dec 1861 Letter from Major W F Eden, Political Agent, Meywar, on leave, London. Finding that the rule which opposed the promotion of absent Staff officers has been repealed, asks for any suitable post, would like to be appointed Agent in Rajpootana.

9661. Dec 1861 Letter from Mr W Muir, Member of the Sudder Board, North West Provinces, Allahabad. Asks for civil employment for his son, Lieutenant W J Muir, Bengal Artillery. Copy of reply, his name has been entered on the list of candidates, which the Private Secretary will leave to his successor.

9663. Dec 1861 Letter from Mr H B Harington, Member of the Legislative Council of the North West Provinces, Calcutta. Reports upon the present state of the Bill to amend Act 10 of 1859. See also 9644, 9677
9664. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Major S R Tickell, Deputy Commissioner Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein. Says that the change of plans of the Governor General has caused the deepest disappointment in Moulmein. Has sent in his application to retire, but asks for his application to be cancelled if he is likely to benefit by the amalgamation of the Provinces. See also 9713 Endorsed: note by Lord Canning.
9665. Dec 1861 Letter from Major J W Carnegie, late Deputy Commissioner of Lucknow, Calcutta. Says he has applied to the Commander-in-Chief for a Court Martial, but has received no reply. Asks to be allowed leave to Europe if no Court Martial is to be allowed him. Copy of reply, he should write officially.

9667. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel A Fytche, Commissioner Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein. Regrets that the Governor General cannot visit Burma. Moulmein is now prosperous, and the people are contented and happy. Exports of timber and grain are more than double the same period in 1860. Had wished to speak with the Governor General about the proposed amalgamation of the Provinces. See also 9514

9670. Dec 1861 Letter from Mr A A Popham, 2nd class Engineer, Bengal Steam Service, Calcutta. Sends a printed petition asking for certain pay and allowances. Six papers. Copy of reply, he must apply through the Secretary to Government Marine Department.

9672. Dec 1861 Letter from Mr R Temple, on special duty, Jubbulpore. Agrees with Colonel Elliot that in Jubbulpore and Saugor the Military expenditure is in excess of local requirements, and suggests different arrangements. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has telegraphed that Lord Canning could not consent to Temple's going by the Godavery route, as he is needed in Calcutta. 9678. Dec 1861 Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel C Davidson, Hyderabad. Replying to his letter of 23 Nov His Excellency replies that he did not attribute want of courtesy to Davidson. With respect to the observation that Davidson had received no instructions to the effect that statutes must be accepted in their entirety, this no doubt is true. But Lord Canning never contemplated that any English officer would suppose that statues which had been confirmed, signed and sealed by the Queen, and proclaimed to the whole Empire, would be altered to suit the fancies of any human being. Davidson's letter tends to confirm the opinion which the Governor General had formed of the whole proceeding. Governor General's Book No 2181
9679. Dec 1861 Letter from Lieutenant W C S Clarke, late 37th Native Infantry doing duty, 77th Foot, Hazareebagh. Repeats his request for civil employment, in the Nagpore or Oudh Commissions. Copy of reply, Private Secretary can give him no hopes at present; there are about 40 names on the list. For a Cantonment Joint Magistracy, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governors. See also 9351

9682. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Major General E Armstrong, Her Majesty's Indian Forces, Madras. Asks for his son Lieutenant E F H Armstrong to be nominated to the Mysore Commission. Copy of reply, he will be considered. The Governor General is unwilling to make any appointments to the Commission until the question raised by the Rajah is settled. See also 8409
9683. Dec 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner Nagpore, Jubbulpore. Proposes to leave for Nagpore with Mr Temple. Everything has been prepared for a Police scheme for the Jubbulpore Districts. Mr Pearson has declined the offer of Judicial Commissioner's post of the Central Provinces. He has now offered the post to Mr Bayley. Is writing to Sir R Montgomery about a Divisional Commissioner and Secretary, named Mr R Egerton and Mr Perkins. Asks for orders authorizing him to take charge of the Jubbulpore Districts. Copy of reply, suggesting various names for Judicial Commissioner. 9685. Dec 1861 Letter from the Manager of Our Paper, Kurrachee. Sends a bill for the paper. Copy of reply, no permission was ever given for the paper to be sent, it is not received in the Private Secretary's Office, and as all subscriptions are paid in advance, the Private Secretary will not pay the bill.
9686. Dec 1861 Copy of a letter to Captain J Reddie, Calcutta. Asking how he disposes of remonstrances against the orders of the Superintendent of Marine; suggests they be sent up to the Governor General with a recommendation. See also 9688

Asks whether the papers in his case concerning the purchase of Government securities after the capture of Lucknow in 1858 have been sent to the Governor General and whether he may expect a decision shortly. 9693. Dec 1861 Letter from the Honourable H Forbes, Member of the Legislative Council for Madras, Calcutta. Says that Colonel Baird Smith has been put on board the 'Candia'. The doctors do not consider his case hopeless. See also 9724

His services in connection with the Nimar Ironworks are too valuable to be spared at present. Sindia is going on well; he intends to make Dinkur Rao's brother Soobah of the Bhind District.
