Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9701 to 9750, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 98 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9701 to 9800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9705, 9706, 9711, 9714, 9716, 9719, 9723, 9724, 9728, 9730, 9731, 9732, 9736, 9740, 9744, 9745, and 9746 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

Has not received any application from Major Tickell, but should the Adjutant General's Office send up his name, it shall be kept out of the list. 9716. Dec 1861 Letter from Rajah Man Singh Bahadur, Ajoodhya. Says that the Talookdars of Oudh are much distressed at the death of Lady Canning, and wish to present an address to the Governor General and erect a Memorial. Asks for information about the Governor General's departure for Rangoon, and England. Copy of reply, thanking him for his letter. The death of Lady Canning has been a great sorrow to the Governor General and Private Secretary does not think it advisable for the Talookdars to present an address, or erect a Memorial. His Excellency will not go to Rangoon, and will probably remain in Calcutta until the end of February.

9719. Dec 1861 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Commissioner of Nagpore, Seonee. Will soon send a list of officers in the two Commissions with his recommendations. The new Commission is to consist of 30 Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners while there are at present 34 officers. Sends a copy of his letter to Sir R Montgomery asking for Mr Egerton and Mr Perkins; and a copy of the telegram sent later. Recommends Civilians for the higher grades in the Commission. Should Mr Bayley refuse the post of Judicial Commissioner he will leave the appointment in the hands of the Governor General. Mentions other appointments. 9731. Dec 1861 Letter from the Hon Sir B Frere, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. Introduces Mr Vishnoo Gungadhur Shastree, the youngest son of Gungadhur Shastree, whose murder at Panderpoor was the cause of the last war with the Peishwa and the Conquest of the Deccan. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary was much pleased with the gentleman, and the Governor General will see him on Friday after Council. See also 9733

9746. Nov - Dec 1861 Letter from Mr H de Schlagintweit, Bavaria. Returns thanks for the information about his late brother Adolphe. Regrets that Captain Smyth's Expedition is suspended, as if his brother Emil was included in the party, some of Adolphe's maps and drawings might have been recovered. Asks to be informed if Captain Smyth's Expedition is sent. Hopes that his brother Emil may be sent at least to Ladak. See also 9336
