Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9801 to 9850, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 99 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9801 to 9900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9801, 9802, 9803, 9804, 9807, 9808, 9810, 9812, 9814, 9819, 9830, and 9849 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
9801. Dec 1861 Letter from Mrs Brandreth, Umballa. Says that by request of Lady Canning she has had a dress embroidered at Delhi for Lady Waterford, and asks what she should do with it. Endorsed : note for reply by Lord Canning. See also 9891
9802. Dec 1861 Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares. Says that Rajah Deo Narraian Singh of Benares is leaving for Calcutta, and the Rajah asks for leave of absence to enable him to join his son's marriage procession.
9803. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Mr C B Saunders, Officiating Commissioner of Mysore, Camp. Sends a Memorandum of recommendations for filling up vacancies in the Mysore and Coorg Commission. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot consent to the retention of Colonel Porter and Major Cunningham after their acceptance of the annuities offered them. The promotions recommended will be gazetted. See also 8580, 9771, 9892. Endorsed: note by Lord Canning.
9804. Dec 1861 Letter from Major General Sir R Napier, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. Sends a letter from Colonel Paton, Deputy Quarter Master General (copy enclosed) suggesting certain arrangements about the transport of home-bound troops, in view of the American news. Napier intends to inspect the 'Renown' with Colonel Paton.
9805. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Mr C J Daniell, Officiating Deputy Commissioner of Jhansi. Applies for the post of Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Central India. Copy of reply, the nomination will be made by the Chief Commissioner.
9806. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Mr G U Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Camp, Oonao. Denies that there is a 3rd class Assistant Commissioner's post vacant in Oudh. Copy of reply, asking for more specific information about the supposed vacancy. Copies of 3 notes about this. See also 9573, 9666, 9837, 9850
9807. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. Places on record his high opinion of Mr Forsyth and Colonel Barrow, who did excellent service in Oudh and were great sufferers, and suggests that if possible, it should be placed on record before the Governor General retires that on a vacancy occurring in the office of Commissioner Colonel Barrow has a claim to it.
9808. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Major R J Meade, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Gwalior. Says that Sindia has heard of the Governor General's intention to employ Dinkur Rao in the Legislative Council without any external symptom of ill-humour. His Highness fears that Dinkur Rao might be disinclined to accept the appointment from dread of the climate of Calcutta. Explains why he has deferred communicating with Dinkur Rao on the subject.
9809. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner Central Provinces, Nagpore. Recommends two appointments, should an Inspector of Jails be sanctioned for the Central Provinces. Endorsed: note by Private Secretary
9810. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Major R J Meade, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Gwalior. Believes he should not stay long at Gwalior, for the reasons given. Suggests Lieutenant Ward, Major Wright or Major Murray for the temporary charge of Gwalior, should Major Keatinge be delayed in taking up the appointment. He must remain at Gwalior until he meets Mr Coles to consider with him and Dr Stratton the Bundelcund Transit Tariff question. There has been an outbreak of the Bheels in Burwanee, which Keatinge will be the fittest person to put down. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not insist on him remaining at Gwalior for any length of time. The Governor General will write himself, about the exchanges with Sindia. Keatinge should not be told of his possible appointment yet. See also 8585, 9694

9812. Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Calcutta. Returns some documents (not enclosed) about the Moulmein Jail .
9813. Dec 1861 Letter from the Editor of 'Our Paper', Kurrachee. In reply, states that his newspaper has been sent to the Governor General since its first appearance in Jan 1860, and as none of the copies was returned, he submitted the bill, and hopes the paper will be continued. Submits the bill again. (Not enclosed). Endorsed: sent to Treasurer for a draft. See also 9685
9814. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Mr J Besemers, junior, Agent. Oriental Inland Steam Company Limited, Calcutta .Sends copy of a letter to the Secretary to Government, asking that the Company may not be excluded from competition with the Indus Flotilla Company in the purchase of steam vessels about to be sold by Government. Copy of reply, the letter will be answered through the official channel.
9815. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Jumna Pershad, Manager of the Soolatoor newspaper, Cawnpore .In reply, submits a Memorandum of the Governor General's subscription to the newspaper from Oct 1860 to Dec 1862. Cover only. Sent to Treasurer. See also 9761

9817. Nov 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Mr James Rain, London. Asks for employment. Printed testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General is unable to hold out any hope that his services will be required.
9818. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Captain P Maxwell, Deputy Commissioner of the Punjab, Googaira. Hopes his petition will eventually be granted. See also 9657
9819. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Maharajah Man Singh Bahadoor, Shah Gunge. Sends a statement of the ceremonials observed towards him by the Ex-King of Lucknow and by the British officers some time ago, and asks for these ceremonies, now discontinued, to be observed whenever he comes to Lucknow on formal visits. Sends a copy of a letter from General MacGregor. Copy of reply, he should apply through the Chief Commissioner. See also 9919

9830. Jan 1862 Letter from Colonel H Bruce, President, Police Commission, Calcutta. Reports that he has just received a telegram from Mr Robinson, Madras, specifying that the Supplemental Estimates will not be sent on, so that the Madras Police cost will be under 38 instead of 43 lacs: which is still higher than expected, but out of this sum, more than 5 lacs are for village Police, a nonrecurring sum. Mr J P Grant's allusion in his Despatch about Bengal Police, to the great extra cost in Madras, is now somewhat refuted.

Copy of reply, the subscription will be paid for 1862, but the Governor General cannot promise to continue, after he ceases to be Governor General, to subscribe.

Asks to be made Interpreter to native Members attached to the Council of India. Printed testimonials. Copy of reply, His Excellency does not foresee any occasion for availing himself of Burroughs' offer.
