Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9851 to 9900, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 99 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9801 to 9900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9854, 9856, 9872, 9878, 9880, 9885, 9887, 9888, 9890, 9898, 9899, and 9900 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9854. Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner Central Provinces, Seetabuldee. Writes about various appointments in the Commission. Is anxious for early orders on various propositions embodied in the joint Report (named). Observes that some of the Bundlecund States should be placed under the Commissioner of Jhansi or else under the Central Provinces, as should the tracts adjoining the Jubbulpore boundary. Asks if there is any special reason why Rewah should have an Agent in direct communication with the Supreme Government. Asks if he may establish a printing press. See also 9773
9855. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr H Lewis, late Master Attendant, Rangoon, Calcutta. Asks for an interview to complain of the hardships of his case, sends documents and asks for his pay to be continued until some vacancy should occur. 3 papers. Copy of reply, the Governor General is too busy to see Lewis. He regrets that he should have lost his position through reductions in the Service, but His Excellency is unable to make any promise of another appointment. See also 9901

9858. Jan 1862 Letter from the Honourable Mr H Forbes, Member of the Legislative Council for Madras, Calcutta. Sends some papers belonging to the Private Secretary's Office, found among Colonel Baird Smith's papers. (Papers not enclosed)
9860. Jan 1862 Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner Simla. Says that he replied a few days ago to an official letter about Bughat, and asks if the matter has been disposed of, as he is anxious to place the young Chief on the Guddee before he leaves by the end of Feb. Asks what has been done about the Sunnuds to the Hill Chiefs. Copy of reply, the Sunnuds are being prepared. The Punjab Government have just declared that Duleep Singh is the lawful son and heir of Comed Singh, so no doubt orders will be issued very soon for acknowledging his claims. Private Secretary was very sorry to hear of Comed Singh's death. See also 9966, 10023. Endorsed: note for reply by Lord Canning.

9865. Jan 1862 Letter from Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Lahore. Hopes to be in Calcutta by the 25 accompanied by Mr Davis. Thanks the Private Secretary for his attempts to get him Lady Canning's photograph.

9867. Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel G Ramsay, Resident at Nepal. Should the Governor General intend to fill up the post of Assistant Resident and Commandant of the Escort, asks for the appointment to be made soon, as the bad season in the Terai begins in April.
9868. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr J Goodeve, Officiating Master in Equity, Supreme Court, Calcutta. Sends a work on the Law of Evidence by himself. Not enclosed. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment.
9869. Jan 1862 Letter from the Honourable E Drummond, Accountant General Calcutta. Sends a letter from Mrs Forbes asking for a Police appointment in the Central Provinces for Lieutenant R Forbes. Copy of reply, Forbes should apply to the Chief Commissioner.
9871. Jan 1862 Letter from Ensign R Richardson, Officiating Quarter Master and Compiler of Pay Abstracts, Her Majesty's 104th Regiment Bengal Fusiliers, Meerut. Applies for the post of Assistant to the Deputy Pay Master, Meerut Circle. Cover only. Endorsed: Transferred to Military Secretary.

9879. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr C B Denison, Civil Service Magistrate and Collector, Mirzapore. Has received the last instalment of Lord Canning's carpets; will send the accounts. Lady Canning's death is greatly felt by all. Mr Wyllie died at Agra on 8 Jan. Mr Alexander Shakespear succeeds Mr Gubbins at Benares. Mr Campbell's appointment to the Saugor Commissionership is a slur upon the writer and many others. See also 8770
9880. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Mr C J Wingfield, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, on leave, London. Asks if an earlier letter of his has been received. Has been shown a despatch from the Secretary of State in which his, Wingfield's, views of the question of primogeniture in the landed families of Oudh were upheld in opposition to those of the Government of India, disclaims having influenced the decision of the Home Government. Has much improved in health, and intends to return to India on expiration of his leave, or earlier. Note about Wingfield's address. Copy of reply, the Governor General will reply to Wingfield's previous letter. He did not think that Wingfield would have influenced the Secretary of State about the primogeniture question. Yule's administration in Oudh has been excellent.
9881. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr R Temple, Calcutta. Asks how many copies of the Report on Central Provinces are to be printed. Colonel Elliot is anxious for the Report to be published, with the possible exception of certain sections. Copy of reply, the Governor General will decide about publication when he has read the printed Report. Private Secretary believes that publication might dispel some of the lies about Elliot which are current. See also 9897, 9923
9882. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Major J G Halliday, 12th Madras Native Infantry Commanding 50th Native Infantry, Bangalore. 9884. Jan 1862 Letter from Captain W B Thomson, Deputy Commissioner Seonee. States his services, and complains that in the list of postings to the new Amalgamated Commission he finds he has been degraded; he believes this is an error, and asks for the matter to be submitted to the Governor General. 2 papers. Copy of reply, the clerical error in his designation has been corrected in the Gazette of 15 Jan. Colonel Elliot has been asked why he has placed Captain Ashburner higher in the Commission than Thomson. See also 9893, 9963

Sends a Memorial asking for some provision for his family until his case can be brought to the notice of the Secretary of State. Memorial no longer enclosed. 9887. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Calcutta. Sends two letters from Dr Williams, Mandalay. The King is well. The resources of the Province are immense, but there is no-one to develop them. There are renewed disturbances in the Shan States. Hostilities between the Kakhyens, the Chinese, and the Mussulmen of Yunan are ended, and the decennial Chinese Embassy is expected. Gives his opinion of some of the Ministers, and the Heir Apparent. Cordial feelings exist between the King and the Prince, both value England's friendship. Williams is on friendly terms with M d'Avera, whom he describes, with some account of his doings. Describes the foreign Residents and some of the Burman officials. Gives the terms on which the 'Ely' was presented to the King. Reports the arrival of some Pathins from the Chinese Frontier. Discussion of the Banio (?) Expedition is deferred.

9890. Jan 1862 Letter from Baboo Dukhinarunjun Mookerjee, Calcutta. Asks for an interview to ask to be allowed to buy land in Bengal in lieu of the land promised him by Mr Wingfield in Oudh. Also wishes to explain a plan for removing causes of disturbances in British Territories adjoining independent Tipperah. 6 papers. 9891. Jan 1862 Letter from Mrs L Brandreth, Camp, Thamessur. Will send the dress for Lady Waterford, acknowledges payment. Has heard nothing from Sir R Montgomery about Mr Brandreth's appointment to the Legislative Council. See also 9801
9892. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Mr C B Saunders, Officiating Commissioner of Mysore, Camp, Belvor. Asks for the Governor General to fill up the vacancies in the Commission as soon as possible, and makes recommendations Copy of reply, the Governor General has agreed to the recommendations. No more Assistants will be sent until the Rajah's claim is disposed of. Private Secretary suggests that Saunders should show the Government how few officers he has; Oudh, which is nearly equal in area and revenue to Mysore, has twice as many Civil officers. 9893. Jan 1862 Letter from Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces, Seetabuldee. Replies about Captain Thomson. Observes that in the Gazette all the 3rd class Assistants have been put on 400 Rupees, whereas he had proposed 500 in his list for all exercising the powers of Magistrate. Sends a return of saltpetre exported from Calcutta from 1 May to 30 Nov 1860, and 1861, and 1 to 26 Dec 1861
9900. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr A M Dowleans, in charge of the Bengal part of the Indian contribution for the London Exhibition, Calcutta. Says the articles will be exhibited at the Bonded Warehouse on 20 Jan, should His Excellency like to see them. Copy of reply, the Governor General will inspect the articles.
