Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9901 to 9950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 100 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9901 to 10000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9903, 9905, 9909, 9910, 9918, 9919, 9920, 9923, 0027, 9928, 9930, 9934, 9942, 9943, and 9949 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

9902. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr J Strachey, President of the Cholera Commission, Calcutta. Asks if he may request Dr Linton who left the Commission at Agra to join as soon as possible in Calcutta the rest of the Commission, in order that the Report may be submitted as soon as possible. Copy of reply, the Governor General says Linton cannot be spared, and the Report must be sent out to him. See also 9757

9903. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr G F Harvey, Commissioner of Revenue, Agra. In view of his services in the Mutiny, complains that he has not received a CB [Companion of the Bath], promotion, or the Indian Medal, and asks for favourable consideration of his case. Copy of reply, his services are not unknown to the Governor General but His Excellency cannot agree to reopen the question of rewards with the Home Government.
9904. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Captain J Reddie, Secretary to Government Marine Department Calcutta. Sends a letter to the Governor General (with covering letter to Private Secretary) from Captain W Henry, Master of the 'Warrior Queen', 16 Jan expressing his disappointment at the failure of his appeal against the rejection of his tenders for conveying troops to England. Copy of earlier letter to Henry, his papers have been transferred to the Marine Department. See also 9751

9909. Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces, Seetabuldee. Submits the name of Captain H MacKenzie as his Secretary. Hopes an Inspector of Prisons as well as Pay Master and Accountant will be allowed. Mr Campbell assumed the post of Commissioner of Saugor on 8 Jan. Will send up his Police scheme for the Saugor and Nerbudda territories, comments.
9910. Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel L Barrow, Chief of Police in Oudh, Lucknow. Says his censure of 1859 and deprivation of all promotion ever since have been a very severe punishment, and asks to be restored now to his former position. Copy of reply, the Governor General has never prevented his promotion, and does not understand what Barrow complains of. He had better tell the Private Secretary what post he has in mind. 9913. Jan 1862 Copy of a letter to Mr H D Sandeman, Civil Paymaster, Calcutta. Asking him to check over a list of appointments, for the benefit of the new Viceroy.

9916. Jan 1862 Letter from Baboo Dukhinarunjun Mookerjee, Calcutta .Says as the Governor General is so busy he will not trouble him with his business. See also 9890, 9908
9917. Jan 1862 Letter from the Honourable G F Edmonstone, Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces, Camp. Asks if any of the three officers named by him are likely to be made Judicial Commissioner of Nagpore, because his arrangements may be altered by this. Copy of reply, the post has been offered to Inglis. Sir R Montgomery is coming to Calcutta to discuss the Punjab Force, finances, river communications, etc. Sir Hope Grant is also to be in Calcutta, to talk over the Madras Army; the Madras Government is apprehensive of the effect of disbanding eight regiments. Putiala has shown some bad temper about the Legislative Council, declaring that he could not sit at the same table with Dinkur Rao, and that his dignity would be assaulted by his doing so. Things have settled down, but Private Secretary does not think Putiala will remain long after Lord Canning's departure. See also 9699, 9925, 9948
9918 . Jan 1862 Letter from Mr H Cope, Umritsur. Asks if any reply has been received from England about the silk. The export of Cotton continues, nearly I00 tons have been sent down by his firm, and 200 to 300 more by native merchants. Copy of reply, a notice in the Journal of the Society of Arts of 15 Nov is favourable to his silk; but no answer has yet been received from the Private Secretary's brother. The Governor General was impressed with Cope's silk at the exhibition of Indian contributions to the Great Exhibition. The account of the export of cotton is very satisfactory. See also 9275, 9994
9919. Jan 1862 Letter from Maharajah Man Singh Bahadoor, Shah Gunge. Only wished in his last letter to ascertain if his request would be considered reasonable. Asks if the Private Secretary's reply dealt with all the points urged by him, or to only 1 or 2 of them. Copy of reply, the ceremonies of reception and taking leave or the Maharajah's meeting with European officers should be laid down by the Chief Commissioner. See also 9819

Returns thanks for the offer of the post of Judicial Commissioner of the Central Provinces, which he asks leave to decline, as he has been offered a Commissionership in the North West Provinces. 9928. Jan 1862 Copy of a letter to Sir R Montgomery, Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, Raneegunge. To await arrival, 21 Jan making arrangements for his arrival at Calcutta. Sir Hope Grant is also coming to Government House. Montgomery will just miss the first sitting of the new Legislative Council, with Putiala, Dinkur Rao and Deonarain Singh; comments. 9930. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr P Saunders, senior, Cotton Commissioner Camp, Phillibeet. Explains the length of his stay in Oudh; he has been examining the great advantage of making a canal from the Sardah River at Borromdeo to run through part of Rohilkund and Oudh. Comments. Believes that the Government of India has done enough for Manchester, and his Commission might be closed with the Oudh Report; but will proceed to the Trans Jumna territories if required. Copy of reply, the Governor General believes his work should now finish. His Excellency would like more details of the proposed canal. See also 10003
9931. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr G S Fagan, barrister, Magistrate, Northern Division, Calcutta. Applies for the post of Recorder of Rangoon, which he understands is to be established. Copy of reply, no such post has yet been settled.
9932. Jan 1862 Letter from Colonel F H Rundell, Acting Deputy Chief Engineer, Northern Circle, on duty to the Godavery, Calcutta. Reports his return from tour, and asks if the Governor General wishes to see him again before his departure. Will submit some memoranda on the works he has visited.
9934. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr E H Lushington, Secretary to the Government of Bengal, Calcutta. In reply, says the Commissioner of Burdwan's answer is awaited for dealing with Mr Ackland's first complaint; and the Collector of Hooghly will be addressed as regards the second complaint. 9935. Jan 1862 Letter from Colonel H M Durand, Secretary, to Government Foreign Department Calcutta. Forwards an extract from a letter from the Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, recommending, in the event of the offices being done away with, the Cantonment Joint Magistrates of Seetapoor and Gonda, Captain Macgrigor 90th Regiment and Captain Tulloch late 17th Native Infantry the present incumbents. Durand reports that the appointments have now been abolished. See also 10020, 10041
9936. Jan 1862 Letter from Major W M Cafe, VC, late 56th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Applies for a post as Superintendent of Police, or any other post. Copy of reply, the Governor General recognizes his claims to consideration, he should also apply to the local Governments.
9937. Jan 1862 Letter from Major J N H Maclean, Madras Staff Corps, Officiating Deputy Commissioner at Dumoh. Complains of his subordinate position in the Central India. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not recognize the justice of his complaint. See also 9948, 9989
9938. Jan 1862 Letter from Dr F Barlow, Civil Surgeon, Amherst. Applies for either the Deputy Superintendency or Civil Surgeoncy of Port Blair. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
9939. Jan 1862 Letter from Major W Davis, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jhansi Division, on special duty, Jhansi. Applies for the Political agency at Gwalior. Copy of reply, the Governor General has made other arrangements.
9940. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr R Temple, Calcutta. Reports that the travelling allowance given him does not cover the actual cost incurred, and asks if he may send a bill to the Financial Department. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has written to Lushington, and the Governor General has ordered that his bill be allowed. See also 9826, 9838, 9947
9941. Jan 1862 Letter from Mrs C Hasell, Calcutta. Writes further to her claim for compensation for losses during the Mutiny. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, her letter has been transferred to the Financial Department. See also 9264
9942. Jan 1862 Letter from the Right Reverend Dr A Hartman, Bishop of Patna. Says he has asked for free passages for clergymen to be sent out from Alexandria or Suez, there being a scarcity of clergymen because the Provinces of Allahabad, Oudh, Cawnpore, Bundlecund, Saugor and Bhotal have been transferred from the Agra to the Patna Mission, he has officially communicated the new arrangements to the Lieutenant Governor North West Provinces. The writer is now entitled to the Government allowance of 500 Rupees, and he believes the Bishop Vicar Apostolic of Agra is also entitled to 500 Rupees. Returns thanks for the Governor General's liberality toward the Catholic Asylum in the Hills. Copy of reply, the Governor General has received his letter, but is too busy to reply quickly. Private Secretary regrets that in defining the ecclesiastical jurisdictions, little or no attention has been paid to the local administrative Divisions of India. The bishop in charge of the Patna Mission will have to correspond with five Heads of local governments.
9943. Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner Central Provinces, Seetabuldee. Has received a most alarming letter from Mr Vincent, who recently resigned his appointment in the Police, he understands the Governor General has received a copy. He has instituted inquiries, though he thinks Vincent's fears are groundless. Has thought it necessary to address the Foreign Department about the abusive article in the ‘Friend of India’ accusing him (Elliot) and the officers under him of being corrupt. Wishes to leave by 10 or 12 Feb. Copy of reply, the Governor General is surprised to learn that Elliot intends leaving so soon, and hopes he will leave by a later steamer. If it is absolutely necessary that he leave Nagpore quickly, he should put Major Spence in charge of his Office. The Governor General has not received a letter from Vincent. 9944. Jan 1862 Letter from Major F P Layard, Superintending Engineer, Northern Circle, Fort William. Applies for the post of Agent to the Governor General at Moorshedabad. He may have to go to England for a short time. Copy of reply, request refused, as it is essential that the Agent be at his post for some time.
9945. Jan 1862 Letter from Dr A Macrae, Presidency Surgeon, Calcutta. Writes on behalf of Nuwab Mohumed Kazim Ali Khan, brother of the late Nuwab of Rampoor, who has petitioned for a greater reward for his services during the Mutiny. Copies or translations of five letters enclosed. Copy of reply, since Mohumed Kazim lives in his brother's territories, and his brother has been so handsomely rewarded, Private Secretary believes he would be referred to the Rampoor man for any further reward. The papers are in the Foreign Department.

9949. Jan 1862 Letter from Colonel H Bruce, Member of the Police Commission, Calcutta. Sends two copies of the final Report of the Commission (1 copy enclosed). His work is now completed, and he awaits the Governor General's orders. Copy of reply, the Governor General will thank him for his exertions. Private Secretary has called His Excellency's attention to the importance of the facts about the requisite strength of the Native Army, the Report shall receive immediate attention.
