Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 9951 to 10000, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 100 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 9901 to 10000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 9966, 9967, 9971, 9972, 9973, 9978, 9982, and 9994 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
9951. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner Benares. Asks if two ''Gooldustas'', from Bunarasee Doss of Lucknow will be accepted by the Governor General if they are too fragile to be sent home for the Exhibition. Copy of reply, the Governor General thinks they can be sent home.
9952. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr R H W Dunlop, Muttra. Still hopes for the post of Superintendent of Darjeeling, asks for information. Copy of reply, he has no chance of the appointment. See also 9738
9953. Jan 1862 Letter from Major W Fane, Commanding His Majesty's 18th Bengal Cavalry, Calcutta. Sends a petition from Goolan Nuksh Bund Khan, Ressaldar Sirdar Bahadoor of the 19th Regiment of Captain Fane's Horse, asking for a Jagheer. Neither letter nor petition enclosed. Copy of reply, the papers will be considered in the Military Department.

9961. Jan 1862 Letter from Colonel H M Durand, Officiating Secretary to Government Foreign Department Calcutta. Will return the Private Secretary's note. Because Arracan has been made over to the Government of India in the Gazette, three passages will have to be modified in the Pegu Resolution. See also 9872

9966. Jan 1862 Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner Simla. Asks to be informed of the terms of the new Sunnuds for the Hill Chiefs, as he wishes to know them before he leaves. 9967. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr J T Prichard, Editor of the Delhi Gazette, Agra. Asks for the Governor General's patronage of a vernacular publication, 'The Oordoo Delhi Gazette'. Enclosure (printed) about the paper. Copy of reply, the Governor General will be pleased to take a copy. See also 9870
9969. Jan 1862 Letter from Kamdar to His Highness the Nuwab of Jowrah, Jowrah. Is glad to hear the Private Secretary is not going to England with the Governor General but regrets he is going back to the Punjab instead of taking up some high appointment near Jowrah. See also 9445
9970. Jan 1862 Letter from Major G G Pearse, Royal Artillery late in the Punjab Commission, Commandant 3rd Sikh Cavalry, Madras. Asks to be made a Commissioner in the Central Provinces. Copy of reply, there are no vacancies.
9971. Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel L Barrow, Chief of Oudh Police, Lucknow. Explains the purport of his last letter, and asks to be promoted, if not in Oudh, in the Central Provinces Commission, or to the Commissionership of the Hyderabad Ceded Districts. Copy of reply, the Berar Commissionership is only worth 2,000 Rupees, and would not be enough for Barrow. Application noted. See also 9910
9972. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr T Oldham, Superintendent Geological Survey, Calcutta. Sends books to His Excellency (not enclosed) as he does not wish the Governor General to leave India without the records of the Geological Survey, which owed much to the support of Lord Canning. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement. Lord Canning will see Oldham before he (Canning) leaves India.
9973. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Dr C Williams, Mandalay. Reports the annoyance of his frequent visits to the Palace, without seeing the King. Remarks on the Burman feeling towards foreigners. Gives particulars of a conversation with the Bamo at Woon. Reports on China trade via Bama; also on a mission from the Rajah of Munnipoor. Both the King and the Bamo at Woon have had conversations with Williams about tea for British markets. Williams will inspect land for tea cultivation. The King wishes to have mocha coffee seed and some fruit and flower seeds. Remarks on the subject of contracts with the King. There has been an attempt on the life of d'Avera, and his property has been robbed. Suggests the construction of a telegraphic line from Burma to the Biriths Frontier. Explains how he dealt with an insult offered him by the Chief Minister. Remarks on some of his patients. Gives his opinion of some of the Burmese officials. Reports a conversation about the last war. 9975. Jan 1862 Letter from Mr G Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Camp. Wishes to come to Calcutta to take leave of the Governor General before His Excellency's departure. Copy of reply, His Excellency will be glad to see him. See also 9666, 9850, 9837
9976. Dec 1861 - Jan 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J C Brooke, Officiating Political Agent, Jeypore. Will close Lady Canning's account as soon as possible. Writes at length about commissions for Lady Canning and others, a marble table, necklace and bracelet, carbuncles [gems], an enamelled casket etc. There is universal sorrow at Lady Canning's death. General Lawrence has gone to Oodepore. The success of the management of Meywar during the Minority will depend largely on the impartiality of treatment of all parties. Asks if he has any chance of confirmation in his post.

9978. Jan 1862 Letter from His Highness the Nawab Ghaus Mahomed Khan, Nawab of Jowrah, Jowrah. Asks advice about the posting of a troop of Cavalry, or a Company of Infantry of the Malwa Contingent in the Jowrah State, under an agreement with a former Agent to the Governor General. Copy of reply, the only Treaty in which Private Secretary finds the Jowrah State concerned is that made at Mundesor in 1818 between Maharajah Mulhor Rao Holkar and Sir J Malcolm. Private Secretary cannot therefore give any opinion on the point raised; but any representation should be made to Major Meade.
9979. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Mr R Viccajee, late Assistant Commissioner in the Assigned Districts, Raichore, Deccan. Is anxious to better his position. Having heard that in view of the unsettled state of the Joudhpore and Oodeypore territories, and death of the Rana of Oodeypore, it is likely that a Court of Regency may be appointed by the British Government, asks for a part in the administration of that state. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot hold out any hope of such an appointment to him.
9980. Feb 1862 Letter from Nawab Alli Nucki Khan, Bahadoor, late Vizier of the Ex-King of Oudh, Calcutta. Sends a Memorial (no longer enclosed) asking for a pension. Copy of reply, his petition has been transferred to the Foreign Secretary.
9981. Jan 1862 Letter from Colonel H M Durand, Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Calcutta. Suggests that a carriage be sent for the Rajah of Kuppoorthulla; and also a detail of the Body Guard to escort him. Copy of reply, the Rajah may get his salute, but he must come in his own carriage. Stewart's rank cannot be gazetted on 1 Feb.
9982. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Colonel G Balfour, Chief of the Military Finance Commission, Calcutta. Replies that he has no knowledge as to the source from which the 'Friend of India' obtained information about the Medical Amalgamation question. Copy of earlier letter, asking for information.

9984. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Shah Kubeeroodeen Ahmed, Sasseram. Expresses sorrow at the death of Lady Canning. Asks to be allowed to pay his respects to Lord Canning. Copy of reply, His Excellency 's time is so crowded, that it is unlikely he will be able to grant an interview.

9986. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant W D Shaw, late 2nd Grenadiers, Allahabad Convalescent Depot, Allahabad. Asks for a staff appointment, preferably in the Police. Copy of reply, he should apply to the local Governments.
9987. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Major B P Lloyd, Deputy Commissioner Ajmeer. Applies for the Political Agency of Bhurtpore. Copy of reply, there is no vacancy.
9988. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Mr A Orr, Madras. Sends a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed) applying for the post of Deputy Commissioner of Issue. Copy of reply, his application has been transferred to the Financial Secretary.
9989. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces. Observes that Major Maclean's is a hard case, but he is unable to place him in a better position. Sends copies of correspondence with Maclean, 3 letters. 9991. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant C A De Kantzow, late 48th Native Infantry doing duty with the 42nd Foot, Camp, Allygurh. Asks for his services to be transferred to the Foreign or Civil list until he is reappointed to the Staff, and that he may be allowed to live at Allygurh. Two letters. To Military Secretary. 9992. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J H Kenrick, Ootacamund. Sends a letter to the Governor General asking for employment in the Telegraph Department. Copy of reply, he should write to the Department Head.
9993. Feb 1862 Letter from Major J R Pugh, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore. Says the Lieutenant Governor wishes to appoint a Military officer to a post at Sumbhulpore, and asks if the Governor General will nominate. Copy of reply, the Governor General wishes to nominate Captain J L Loch, Bengal Cavalry, who does not object to the South West. See also 10001A, 10004
9994. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Mr H Cope, Umritsur. Asks for a copy of the paragraph from the Society of Arts' report. The future prospects for silk cultivation seem good. Other comments. Copy of reply, sending a copy of the paragraph. Private Secretary's brother could arrange for some of Cope's silk, now in England, to appear in the Great Exhibition. See also 9918

9996. Feb 1862 Letter from Sir H B E Frere, Member of the Supreme Council, Calcutta. Asks for the Governor General's views on the part he should take in requiring the Sheriff to convene a meeting to draw up an Address to the Queen, expressing sorrow at Prince Albert's death. Does not think the figures can be implicity relied upon, but they give a good general idea of the case. Believes it would be a great advantage if an account of the state of the whole Indian Army were to come before the Governor General periodically.
