Notes respecting Sourabaya
- Scope & Content:
-
(a) 26 July 1813. Notes respecting the Interior of Sourabaya [= Surabaya] District, with some description of remarkable coconut trees, by Colonel Adams. Topographical and descriptive notes of a journey taken in April 1813, with remarks on irrigation, forests, agriculture, antiquities (two inscriptions are mentioned), and two abnormal coconut palms divided into five and two branches respectively.
(b) Notes respecting a journey from Sourabaya [= Surabaya] to Samarang [= Sĕmarang], Souracarta [= Surakārta], Djocjocarta [= Jokyakarta], the South Sea Shore, the Cadoe [= Kĕdu], Jabraranka District, & Paccalongan [= Pĕkalongan]. By Colonel Adams in April & May 1813. A fairly detailed, topographical account of the route taken, with a good deal of general information on the appearance of the country, the state of agriculture, etc. On the South Coast, South of Jokyakarta, the writer notices a hot spring and a petrifying stream.
(c) Notes made by Captain Davy, 4th Bengal Volunteers, Assistant to the Deputy Civil Commissioner when on a short trip through the Provinces of Djapan [= Japan], Djafan [lege DDjipan = Jipang], and Wier Sabo [= Wirasaba], to take possession of them, in September 1812. Comprising statistics of population, of the contingents of money and produce deliverable to Government by those districts, some other information as to their products, etc.
(d) Description of a Plain of Volcanic nature situation at Kerivo in the Province of Were Suree [= Zuirosari] in the dominions of His Highness the Soosoohoonan [= Susuhunan]; by Lieutenant Hart, 78th Regiment, Assistant to the Resident of Solio who visited it in the afternoon of the 28th August 1812. On this plain were a number of mud volcanoes; also salt works and salt springs, with others in the near neighbourhood.
(e) Memoranda respecting two mineral springs in the Regency of Bangel [= Bangil] communicated by Mr De Waith, Resident at Parsnang [= Paswnan] March 1813. On a hot spring in the Malay district and a cold one in the mountains of Antang; the former (from the description) being apparently sulphurous or feringinous, the latter containing various salts.-
(f) Notes respecting the Tar Wells in the Neighbourhood of Sourabaya [= Surabaya] 7th March 1813. Apparently wells containing crude petroleum. Allusion is made to the existence of other such wells, in Madura.
(g) Memorandum concerning the CaliPooter [= Kali Putih] or White River. The visit to this river was paid in October 1812. The river is also described in Mackenzie Private 36.Ii, q.v., and there called Songi Pouti [= Sungai Putih]. Its more usual name appears to be Bangu Putih, all these appellations merely describing it by its colour.
(h) Observations made in a visit to the Top of Goonong Merapi [= Gunung Mĕrapi] a Volcano near Bojalallie [= Bayalali]; about 20 or 30 miles west of Souracarta [= Surakarta] 21st April 1812 by Captain Bethune, 78th Regiment, and Lieutenant Green, 3rd Bengal Volunteer Battalions. A few notes on the difficulties of the ascent, and a brief description of the crater and the view from the Summit.
(i) Further remarks respecting the same mountain. A short note on the beds of lava in this neighbourhood. Mention is made of the fact that in some places they showed the imprints of human feet, cattle tracks, &c.
(j) A short sketch of the Native History of Java by Mr Crawford [J Crawfurd] Resident of Djocjocarta [= Jokyokarta]. Another copy of the same original as Mackenzie Private 22.3, q.v., but wanting the last few lines and the notes there appended. cf Mackenzie Private 85.3.
(k) Translation of an account of the Islands of Bali and Lombok, in a report made by Inche Bovang [= Buang] to Mr Rothembuhler [= Rthenbuhler], Gazaghebber [= gezaghebber] of Java Oast Hoek [= Eastern Java], dated Sourabaya [= Surabaya] 26 June 1805. Subject to verbal variations and slight omissions, this is the same as Mackenzie Private 82.3 (a), q.v., and was no doubt translated from the same original (presumably Malay through a Dutch version).
