Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 10001 to 10050, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 101 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 10001 to 10100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 10002, 10003, 10012, 10013, 10024, 10025, 10029, 10030, 10036, 10037, 10044, and 10045 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
10001. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner Delhi, Calcutta. Asks for his name to be noted as a candidate for a post as Commissioner in the Central Provinces. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 10032
10001a. Feb 1862 Copy of a letter to Mr G Loch, Judge of the Sudder Dewanny Adawlut. Asking if the Judge's son John would like to be nominated assistant for Sumbhulpoor. It is likely to be soon amalgamated with Raipoor in the Central Provinces, so that the boy would be one of a large Commission. He might be offered a post in the Punjab, but that would depend upon a vacancy occurring. See also 9993, 10004
10002. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J Clarke, Commissioner of the Khyrabad Division, Camp on the Surdah. Having heard that a new Rupee is to be issued, says that many of the natives object strongly to the head of the Queen being on the coin, as this is most disrespectful. Has been promised a pair of elephant's tusks for the Governor General. Asks if the Governor General would like Biswa chintz for bed-covers and table cloths. Copy of reply, the Governor General would like the chintz. Private Secretary is aware of the feeling about the Queen's head, but is not sure that Government viewpoint should be affected by this prejudice.

10008. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces. Promises not to leave Nagpore before he is relieved. Will send his certificate through the Foreign Department to the Military authorities. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not wish him to remain if it entails any risk to his health. 10009. Feb 1862 Copy of a letter to Mr G U Yule, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asking him to help Lord Listowel and Colonel Tower with elephants against Oudh tigers.
10010. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr E H Lushington, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Asks whether the Governor General has lately written to the Rajah of Sikkim, believes the Rajah meant the Lieutenant Governor.
10011. Feb 1862 Letter from Dr T Dillon, Assistant Surgeon, in Medical Charge of Her Majesty's 44th Native Infantry and Civil Station, Cherrapoongie, Calcutta. Asks if the Governor General would like to see him, in view of his long experience of the people of the Khasiah Hills, and their disturbed state. Endorsed: to have an interview on 10th at 3pm.
10012. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J W B Money, Barrister, Calcutta. Further to an earlier letter, explains that he has received a complimentary letter from the Duke of Brabant, the future King of Belgium, about his book on Java, and now he (Money) wishes further information to send the Duke. Also wishes to express the appreciation he feels for the Governor General's two crowning measures, giving natives a share in the Government, and the passing of the fee simple Resolution. 10013. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J W B Money, Barrister, Calcutta. Sends the Dutch Colonial Report for 1856 (not enclosed) with remarks, and asks for the Indian Colonial Report to Parliament. Endorsed: sent. See also 10005, 10012, 10014
10014. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J W B Money, Barrister, Calcutta. Further to a previous letter, explains that what he wants are the 'Reports of the Moral and Material Progress of India' yearly submitted to Parliament. Any one year would suffice. See also 10005, 10012, 10013
10015. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J J Hogan, Calcutta. Asks for money.
10016. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J R Savi, indigo planter, Calcutta. Sends a letter to the Governor General and asks for an interview. Endorsed: note for reply, no leisure, will receive any representation in writing.
10017. Feb 1862 Letter from John Sham Rao, Saugor. Has arranged for his many pages of his abridgement of the Penal Code as are printed to be sent to the Private Secretary and asks for the patronage of the Governor General. 1/2 anna stamp. 10018. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr A Grote, Member of the Board of Revenue, Calcutta. Asks if the Private Secretary would like to have an orang utan for the Barrackpore Park, there is one for sale for 150 Rupees. Is writing to Mr Bruce about passports. Copy of reply, the animal will be bought if healthy.

10022. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr H C Wake, Magistrate and Collector of Patna, on leave, Calcutta. Applies for the post of Superintendent of Darjeeling, with retention of his pay as Magistrate and Collector, 2nd grade. Copy of reply, the application will be considered, but His Excellency does not intend to increase the pay of the appointment. See also 10039, 10046
10023. Feb 1862 Copy of a letter to Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner, Simla. Informing him that the Governor General has signed the grant to Duleep Singh of the estate of Bughat, with details of the arrangements made. See also 9860, 9966
10024. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J G Medlicott, Calcutta. Has completed his cotton compilation, and asks if the result is approved of by the Governor General. Copy of reply, the Governor General is pleased with the work, though he has not had time to study it thoroughly.

10028. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J Strachey, President, Cholera Commission, Calcutta. Replies that he will be very glad to accept the post of Judicial Commissioner of the Central Provinces. Major Stewart's appointment to Persia has thrown a good deal of the work of the Cholera Commission upon him, he fears that it will be impossible to send in the whole report officially before the Governor General's departure. Sends a letter and enclosure from the Secretary to the Punjab Government of 9 Dec 1861 reporting three vacancies in the grade of Assistant Commissioner and asks for instructions. 10036. Feb 1862 Letter from Dr T Dillon, Assistant Surgeon, in Medical Charge of Cherrapoongee, Khasiah Hills, Calcutta. Says that as he had parted from his wife and family just before his interview with the Governor General, he was not able to give lucid information about the people of the Khasiah hills. He will call on the Private Secretary during the day. He wished to bring to the Governor General's notice the want of proper supervision in the levying of the taxes imposed on the hill tribes, and suggest a remedy. He also wished to point out the additional punishment imposed on the Khasiah, in obliging him to undergo imprisonment in the plains. Wishes to suggest the establishment of some system of medical charitable relief.
10037. Feb 1862 Letter from Major R J Meade, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Camp, near Jhansi. Has applied for the services of Lieutenant Ward officially, to settle some troublesome boundary questions in Malwa, and asks that if his application is granted, Ward may be appointed an Officiating Political Assistant in the Central India Agency. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot decide until he sees the official application.
10038. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant C M Moberly, Madras Staff Corps, Trichinopoly. Asks for employment in the Central Provinces Commission. To the Military Secretary. Copy of reply, there are no vacancies.
10039. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr H C Wake, Magistrate and Collector, Patna, Calcutta. Asks when the Darjeeling appointment will be filled up, as he is losing a great deal of pay by staying in Calcutta. See also 10022, 10046
10040. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr W R Davies, Deputy Magistrate and Collector, Bhaugulpore. Renews his request for employment in the Central Provinces. Copy of reply, there are no vacancies. See also 9680
10041. Feb 1862 Letter from Captain W T McGrigor, Bengal Staff Corps, late Her Majesty's 90th Light Infantry, Seetapore. States that his appointment has been abolished (Cantonment Joint Magistrate of Seetapore) and asks to be made 1st class Assistant Commissioner in Oudh. To the Military Secretary. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not see any probability of being able to comply with his request.
10042. Feb 1862 Letter from Captain A P S Moncrieff, Assistant Commissioner, Camp, Chota Nagpore. Complains of supercession. To the Military Secretary. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not receive any private remonstrance from Moncrieff; he may apply officially if he wishes to.
10043. Feb 1862 Letter from Major C Herbert, Superintendent of the Mysore Princes, Alipore. Applies for the post of Agent to the Governor General at Moorshedabad. Copy of reply, His Excellency is unable to hold out any hope to him of this appointment.
10044. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr G Walder, landholder, Purneah. Asks for the India Medal. Statement of services, and copies of two letters enclosed. Copy of reply, he should apply to Secretary to Government Military Department.
10045. Feb 1862 Letter from Major W McCullock, Political Agent at Munneepore, Calcutta. Writes about officers fitted to succeed him. Is sorry not to have stated to the Governor General at his interview that the removal of the treasure, the guard, and Agency servants ordered by Captain Stewart, might cause much alarm in Munneepore and encourage the disaffected to attempt a revolution. 10050. Feb 1862 Letter from Dr T Dillon, Assistant Surgeon in Medical Charge of Cherapoonjee, Calcutta. Asks for employment in the Police for his brother. Has heard from Colonel McCulloch that Captain Sherer would not accept the post of Political Agent at Munneepoor. Copy of reply, Police appointments are made by the local Governments.
