Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 10051 to 10100, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. Writes introducing Captain Pearse, 1st Assistant and Secretary of the Mysore Commission, who has a scheme for the revision of the Mysore Commission, which he is to submit officially if the Private Secretary thinks the Governor General will receive it favourably, and also pass orders upon it before leaving India; otherwise he is not to send it in, and it will be replaced by an application for an increase to the present staff. If the Commission is placed upon the footing of the Oudh and Nagpore Commissions, the work will be very efficiently done. See also 9892, 10068

10069. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr C B Saunders, Officiating Commissioner of Mysore, Bangalore. Has entrusted Captain Pearse with two volumes of the Duke of Wellington's original correspondence with the Resident of Mysore (marked, ''sent to Colonel Durand') during the time Wellington was in command of the British forces in the Mysore Territories. These volumes belong to his Office, but he has thought it desirable to send them to Calcutta so that the Governor General may convey them to England and deposit them in the British Museum or the State Paper Office. All the letters have been printed in the Mysore Government Press. Copy of reply, the Governor General says Saunders should not have sent up the volumes of Wellington's letters. As Officiating Commissioner, he has no authority to dispose of records, to deprive the Commissioner of the originals, or to print copies for circulation. It is still less becoming for Saunders to announce that the Governor General will be requested to take the papers to England, without making reference to the Governor General. The British Museum is not a place of deposit for modern documents, and there is no better reason for sending the papers to England, than for sending the original papers of Warren Hastings or Lord Wellesley. Further comments. The papers will now be placed among the records of Government, in Calcutta. He is not to distribute any more copies of the printed volume, and is to remove the Preface in the undistributed copies, which should be deposited in the Commissioner's Office. He states in the Preface that the letters have been printed verbatim, whereas in the edition printed in England, various passages were suppressed or modified. To print these passages was a proceeding of very questionable propriety. Miscellaneous books number 348; Telegraph Messages received number 1392; See also 10067, 10068, 10104
