Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 10101 to 10150, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 102 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 10101 to 10200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 10101, 10103, 10110, 10112, 10116, 10117, 10119, 10124, 10127, 10135, 10138, 10145, and 10149 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
10101. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J Strachey, President, Cholera Commission, Calcutta. Replies that his Report is still uncompleted, but he will forward the part that is ready. Has heard that he is wanted to start for Nagpore as soon as possible, but the Report cannot be finished in less than a fortnight. Copy of earlier letter, asking how soon the Report will be ready. 10102. Feb 1862 Copy of a letter to Colonel G Ramsay, Resident, Khatmandu. Informing him that his Assistant is to be Captain James Hills VC, of the Artillery, at present an Aide-de-Camp on His Excellency's Staff.
10103. Feb 1862 Copy of a letter to Colonel Sir H Edwardes, Calcutta. Sending him copies of Sir Henry Lawrence's letters, written at the end of his life, with some extracts from previous letters sent from Rajpootana. A few passages have been struck out. The clerk's labour is worth about 16 Rupees, for 16000 words (no enclosures). See also 10151.

10109. Feb 1862 Letter from Colonel E R Mainwaring, Her Majesty's Indian Army, Calcutta. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, His Excellency is unable to hold out any hopes.
10110. Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot, Chief Commissioner of the Central Provinces Regrets that he will have to leave before the arrival of his successor, asks his name. Captain Mackenzie is expected at Nagpore shortly. Asks if a Judicial Commissioner is to be appointed. Telegraph Messages received number 1379; See also 10008
10111. Feb 1862 Letter from Major H C James, Executive Engineer Berhampore Division, Calcutta. Applies for the post of Superintendent of Darjeeling. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
10112 . Feb 1862 Letter from Mr J Strachey, President Cholera Commission, Calcutta .Sends some printed papers which form part of the Cholera Report (not enclosed). Fears the Report will take more than a fortnight. Will leave for Nagpore and send the Report from there. Copy of reply, the Governor General thinks Strachey should stay in Calcutta until His Excellency leaves. See also 10101
10113. Feb 1862 Letter from Major C V Bowie, Military Secretary to the Governor General, Calcutta. Writes that he believes the Military Secretary has control over the Government House Treasurer. Two letters. Copy of letter from Private Secretary, he believes that the Private Secretary has control over the Government House Treasurer, and if the Military Secretary is not convinced, he should ask for the Governor General's orders. 10114. Feb 1862 Copy of a letter to Baboo Hem Chunder Dutt, Calcutta. Informing him that his Memorial will be considered in the Financial Department.
10115. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr R H Davies, Secretary to the Punjab Government, Lahore. Writes about vacancies as Assistant Commissioner naming Mr Cowan and Mr F E Moore, and Lieutenant Lang. Two letters. Memorandum about Lang. The price of corn is very high. Copy of reply, the men named will be appointed. For the other vacancies, suggests, with comments, Captain Wemyss Smith, Lieutenant C Beadon, Lieutenant R H de Montmorency, Lieutenant W Tweedie. Private Secretary has also a great many names of officers with up to and over 20 years service, but Private Secretary is aware that Sir Robert objects to old officers. See also 9991, 10029, 10130
10116. Feb 1862 Letter from Colonel A P Phayre, Chief Commissioner of British Burma, Rangoon. Says the price of rubies is excessively high, he will write again on the subject. Asks if any letters are received from a Mr Crisp, who sometimes sends the Chief Commissioner most interminable epistles. Hopes that before leaving India the Governor General will record that it is desirable that the Chief Commissioner should go to the capital of Burma to arrange for some guarantee from the Burmese Government about the trade to China and frontier duties on their side of the border, in case those on the British side are given up. Endorsed: answered privately.
10117. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr P Saunders, senior, Cotton Commissioner, Camp, Sultanpore. Does not expect to finish his report for some time. Will send six copies to the Governor General in England when it is printed. Would like to explain the Sarda Canal project to the Governor General personally, will hope to do so to Lord Canning's successor. Has heard that the Governor General contemplates giving a permanent settlement to the North West Provinces and Oudh, which he strongly advocates. But there are large tracts in the north of Rohilcund and Oudh where such a measure would be injurious to the Public Revenues, unless the uncultivated lands were assessed as well as the cultivated.

10119. Jan - Feb 1862 Letter from Dr C Williams, on a visit to Burma, Mandalay. Reports the result of his visit to the Shan Hills and the tea plantations, and his conversation with the King on the subject. The King is anxious to have a man who can blow glass, and another who can make crockery. Reports a conversation about cinnamon. There is no news from Bamo, but the distrust of the present peace continues. No Chinese products are expected this year. His medicines and instruments have arrived, he has some operations to perform. He has dismissed the apothecary for drunkenness. Dr Bastian is not pleased with the Burmese, they make him live in town. The King, hearing of the union of the three Provinces, remarked that there would be peace and friendship as long as Colonel Phayre governed. To Colonel Phayre.
10120. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr T C Jerdon, Asiatic Society, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General to speak of the progress of his work, and to ask for an extension of his term of duty. Endorsed: answered privately.

10122. Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant J Upperton, 19th Bengal Cavalry, Calcutta. Applies for an appointment as Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab or Oudh, or in the Police. Two enclosures. Copy of reply, application noted.
10123. Feb 1862 Letter from Messrs Thacker Spink and Company, Calcutta. Write that they do not know through whom the Governor General subscribed to Mr Carpenter's Hog Hunting pictures; his name is entered in the Subscription Book. Two enclosures, one being a letter from the printers Day and Son, London. Copy of reply, sending 50 Rupees.
10124. Feb - Mar 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel J P Beadle, Officiating Secretary to the Government of Bengal Public Works Department, Calcutta. Sends a plan (not enclosed) of St John's Church compound showing where he would propose to place the Dalhousie Institute, with a memorandum in explanation. Three papers. Copies of two replies, His Excellency does not like the proposed site, as the Institute would close up the open junction of Government Place with the space in which the Church stands. But if there is no objection on the score of consecration, the site which His Excellency has marked in red pencil on the Church Lane side would do very well. Endorsed: note for reply by Lord Canning. 10125. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr T A Brown, Deputy Collector and Deputy Magistrate, Agra. Asks for an appointment in one of the Non Regulation Provinces. Three enclosures. Copy of reply, the Governor General is unable to hold out any hope.
10126. Feb 1862 Letter from Mr G U Yule, Officiating Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Calcutta. Sends two boxes of papers (not enclosed) about the rows on the Eastern Frontier, and remarks that he has failed to learn therefrom the origin of the disturbances.
10127. Feb 1862 Letter from Rundheer Singh, Rajah of Kupoorthulla. Before submitting a formal application, asks if the Governor General would either give him the same powers in his Oudh Estates as he has in Kupoorthulla, or confer upon him, in lieu of the Oudh Estates, the confiscated estate of Jugraon. Letter no longer enclosed. Copy of reply, His Excellency declines receiving privately an application which should be preferred officially. Private Secretary does not think, however, that the proposal would be favourably received. Endorsed: Transferred to Secretary to Government Foreign Department. See also 10132
10128. Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant T Acton, Officiating 1st Assistant Political Agent, Rewah, Nagode. Asks if anything is known of a report about Bundlecund being made over to Rewah, which was sent to Sir C Wood; asks because he was recommended by Captain Osborne for the post of personal Assistant with charge of the Bundlecund work. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has not heard of such a scheme for a long time, he does not know if Osborne is urging it in England.
10129. Feb 1862 Letter from Major W M Cafe VC, late 56th Native Infantry, Darjeeling. Gives his address, and says that any appointment would be acceptable.
10130. Feb 1862 Letter from the Honourable C Beadon, Member of the Supreme Council of India, Calcutta. Is grateful for the nomination of his son to the Punjab. Has benefitted from his trip to the Sandheads, but fears he will never be quite well till he gets out of Calcutta. See also 10115

10134. Feb - Mar 1862 Letter from Dr E Impey, Post Master General, Bombay, Mhow. Suggests a scheme for accelerating the transit of the English mails (letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his suggestions appear to be valuable, but the Governor General wishes the matter considered in the Home Department.
10135. Dec 1861 - Feb 1862 Letter from Mr C B Saunders, Officiating Commissioner of Mysore, Camp, Coomsee. Sends a letter of condolence from the Rajah of Mysore to the Governor General. Expresses his own sorrow at the death of Lady Canning. (Copy of the Rajah's letter enclosed; also copy of Saunders' letter to the Foreign Department about this.) 10136. Feb 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel G W Bishop, Officiating Superintendent of Stationery, Calcutta. Sends a copy of a letter from the Board noticing the large expenditure of chit paper in the Government House, and asking the Private Secretary to check this. Office memorandum. Copy of reply, Private Secretary does not think the amount used excessive, but asks for further details.
10137. Feb - Mar 1862 Letter from Mr C J French, Superintendent of the Financial branch of the Office of Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asks for an early decision on his Memorial; asks for re-employment. Copy of reply, the Governor General is unable to hold out hopes of employment. 10138. Feb 1862 Letter from Colonel H Yule, Secretary to Government Public Works Department, Calcutta. Reports the arrival of the Cawnpore model.
10139. Feb - Mar 1862 Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C Hervey, General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoitee, Jubbulpore. Says it is necessary to fill the post of Assistant General Superintendent at Nagpore, and suggests Lieutenant W A Gillespie, Bombay Staff Corps. Makes suggestions about the future of the Department.
