- Scope & Content:
-
Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 10151 to 10200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 102 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 10101 to 10200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 10151, 10154, 10160, 10161, 10164, 10165, 10166, 10167, 10168, 10170, 10173, 10174, 10176, 10178, 10179, 10182, 10190, 10194, 10195, 10196, 10198, and 10200 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
10151. Jan - Mar 1862 Letter from Mr J W Kaye, Secretary, East India Office, Political and Secret Department, London. Has decided to write a History of the Mutiny of the Bengal Army, and asks to be furnished with information. Trusts that a Despatch which goes out on the subject of Lord Canning's recent visits to Lucknow and Benares will be gratifying to the Governor General though it is not quite what he, Kaye, wished it to be. Private. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary is glad that the work is being done by such a capable man, but is afraid that at such a late period of Lord Canning's Government, he can give little documentary assistance, as all the papers of the Private Secretary's Office are packed up for despatch to England. The Private Secretary's Office contains a vast quantity of most valuable material bearing on the Mutiny. Many of the documents are personal, and Lord Canning might object to their production. Kaye should see Lord Canning on his return to England. Kaye will find it hard to give a satisfactory account of the origin of the Mutiny, where there is such discrepancy between the opinions of the most experienced officers, and where the natives themselves assign a dozen different causes for the outbreak. Sir H Edwardes has been given by the Private Secretary copies of several letters written by the late Sir Henry Lawrence, among which is one that gives the best resume Private Secretary has seen of the causes of dissatisfaction among the native troops. This part of the subject can be more easily treated, but when mutiny spread into rebellion, a hundred converging causes came into play. Lord Canning has bound up a curious collection of papers, many of them official, compiled by a Mr Chick, called 'Annals of the Indian Rebellion', which might be useful. See also 10103
