Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 10235 to 10268, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 103 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 10201 to 10268’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 10238, 10239, 10240, 10241, 10243, 10244, 10248, 10249, 10250, 10251, 10258, 10259, 10260, 10261, 10262, 10263, 10264, 10265, 10266, 10267, and 10268 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
10235. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr C U Aitchison, Under Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Calcutta. Sends copy of a notification saying that Lieutenant Colonel E K Elliot had made over the duties of his office to Lieutenant Colonel J K Spence, Commissioner of Nagpore.
10236. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr T B Lawrence, Calcutta. Sends a bill for Lord Canning's subscription to the second volume of Lawrence's 'Six Years in the North West', and asks for Lord Canning's address. Copy of reply, he may apply to the Private Secretary to Lord Elgin for a subscription, Lord Canning does not require the second volume. See also 8806
10237. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr C B Saunders, Officiating Commissioner of Mysore, Bangalore. Sends a copy of a valedictory letter from the Rajah of Mysore, the original has been sent to the Foreign Secretary. Expresses his own thanks to Lord Canning for many favours received. 10239. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr R Temple, Officiating Chief Commissioner Central Provinces, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to draw various allowances at Nagpore. Copy of reply, His Excellency thinks he has been liberally dealt with.
10240. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr C Grant, Calcutta. Asks the Governor General to accept two volumes, one being an account of Anglo Indian domestic life, and the other being a collection of rough lithographic portraits (Not enclosed). Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
10241. Mar 1862 Letter from Major J T Walker, Superintendent, Great Trigonometrical Survey, Calcutta. Sends photographs of operations of the Survey. Intends asking permission to publish photographs of the Department from time to time. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
10242. Mar 1862 Letter from Mrs E B Jones, Chinsurah. Repeats her request for money.
10243. Mar 1862 Copy of a letter to Colonel H M Durand. Sending him a duplicate received from Mr Saunders. Lord Canning would like to answer the letter himself.
10244. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr E H Lushington, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Asks whether Lord Canning wishes the Nawab Nazim to be pressed for an answer about the 20,000 Rupees. Copy of earlier letter, Lord Canning has heard a report that some of the Nawab's people have been offering money in the Nawab's case; will Lushington report on this immediately. Copy of reply, Lord Canning wishes the Nazim to be told that unless a satisfactory answer is given, His Lordship will not see him. See also 10250, 10251

10247. Mar 1862 Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel C Douglas, Calcutta. Asking for an explanation for the delay in transmitting a telegram to Mr Thornhill at Allahabad.
10248. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr W Brett, Editor of the Englishman, Calcutta. Asks when the Governor General would receive a deputation, with an address. Draft address, and list of members of deputation, enclosed. Copy of reply, Private Secretary will consult the Governor General. See also 10197
10249. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr H Scott Smith, Registrar of the University, Calcutta. Sends a rough copy written from memory of the Governor General's address in reply to the address of the Senate, and asks for the Governor General to rearrange it.
10250. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr E H Lushington, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Says that a short time ago he received a letter from a native stating that Mr Montrion has taken from the Nawab Nazim 20,000 Rupees on Mr Lushington's account, and this letter, by order of the Lieutenant Governor was sent to the Collector of Moorshedabad for inquiry, but no reply has yet been received. The above is the only case he is aware of in which the name of any Government servant has been used in connection with the Nawab Nazim' s affairs. See also 10244, 10251
10251. Mar 1862 Letter from Mr E H Lushington, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Says that since writing last, he has received a letter through the Collector, from the Nawab Nazim, strongly denying that he had ever remitted 20,000 Rupees to Mr Montrion, and wishes the author of the slander to be brought to punishment. 10258. Mar 1862 Letter from Dr T C Jerdon, Assistant Surgeon, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the information that the Governor General will take 50 copies of his work, and asks to be allowed to dedicate the work to him. Copy of reply, the Governor General will be pleased to have the work dedicated to him.
10259. Mar 1862 Letter from Baboo Kristodoss Paul, Secretary, Hurrish Testimonial Committee, Calcutta. Sends copies of the Report of the meeting held in honour of the late Baboo Hurrish Chunder Mookerjea; the Committee have decided to apply the fund being raised, to erect a public building to be used by the native community for intellectual and social purposes. One copy of Report enclosed. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, the Governor General will take the Report to England with him.

10261. Mar 1862 Letter from Baboo Ramaprusad Roy, Secretary of the Committee, Calcutta. In compliance with the request of a public meeting, asks Lord Canning to sit for his portrait on his return to England, to an artist who will make a statue of him to be erected in Calcutta. Copy of reply, Lord Canning has much pleasure in complying with the request. See also 10262

Sends a parchment to be tacked to the address from the native community, with a rough proof of Lord Canning's reply. Parchment not enclosed. Copy of reply, the proof of Lord Canning's reply is fairly accurate, and as Lord Canning has no notes, he cannot now furnish any further materials. See also 10261
