A dissertation on the position of the Chinese in Java, the rights to which they can properly claim to be entitled, their relations with the British during the Napoleonic war, their national characteristics as labourers, traders, farmers of taxes, etc., their means of acquiring wealth, their competition with Europeans, their superstitions and dishonesty, their connexion with the slave-trade and its abominations, their unpopularity among the Javanese, whom they cheat and impoverish, etc. The author's estimate is highly unfavourable and unsympathetic.
