Letters and copy replies, originally bundled between teak boards with Mss Eur F699/2/5/12-14. Largely requests for patronage, financial assistance, positions, invitations to official engagements and formal introductions. Letters are registered in Mss Eur F699/2/5/9 and indexed in Mss Eur F699/2/5/10.
1. 7 Apr 1856 Letter from Mrs Mary A Stuart, Honorary Secretary Female Normal School, Calcutta. Request for Lady Canning to become Lady Patroness of the Female Normal School and to visit the institution, reply arranges visit, agrees regular contribution of 50 rupees a quarter and declines invitation to become patroness.
2. 19 May 1856 Letter from Mrs L Maria ?, Calcutta. Offer of sale of photographic views of India to defray the expense of joining her husband, now working for the East India Railway Company at Allahabad, reply agrees purchase of four of them at a cost of 20 rupees. The surname is listed in the register as Ochene.
3. 14 Mar 1856 Letter from Ranfurly, Dungannon Park, Tyrone.Recommends Mr Francis Wray, assistant in the telegraph office at Bellary
4. 14 May 1856 Letter from J Van Gelder, professor of music, Calcutta. Requests permission to dedicate a polka mazurka for the piano to Lady Canning, which is agreed to by reply.
5. 9 Apr 1856 Letter from Henry John Kouwen, Madras. Requests permission to dedicate piece of music to Lady Canning, which is agreed to by reply of 3 Jun, following receipt of answer to enquiry about him to Lord Harris.
6. 21 May 1856 Letter from Lord Harris, Madras. Reply to enquiry made about Mr Kouwen explaining he is an Indian clerk at the artillery depot.
7. 21 May 1856 Letter from Mrs Maria Hamilton, Brighton. Recommends Mr W Plowden of the Bengal civil service to Lord Canning
8. 16 Jul 1856 Letter from the governors of the Calcutta Free School Requests a visit that is agreed to.
9. 7 Jul 1856 Letter from Lady Agnes Duff. Recommends Lieutenant William Paul of the 7th Bengal Native Infantry
10. 16 Dec 1856 Letter from Lord Dunkellin at Bushire [Bushehr], Persia. Recounts events at camp, with extracts selected for copy enclosed.
11. 8 Dec 1856 Letter from Lady Elizabeth Orde, London. Recommends Mr Douglas Forsyth in the civil service of the East India Company.
12. 1857 Letter from Reverend D Laing. Recommends William Joseph Shaw, assistant surgeon.
13. 2 Dec 1856 Note with recommendation Lieutenant Edgar Stone of the 40th Bengal Native Infantry received in a letter from Dowager Lady Caroline Somers.
14. 22 Nov 1856 Note with recommendation Charles Melville Pym of the 75th mentioned in a letter from Lady Stuart de Rothesay.
15. 20 Jan 1857 Letter from Richard C Trench.Commends his son in the Bengal cavalry to the Cannings.
16. 13 Nov 1856 Letter from Duchess of Roxburghe, Floors Castle. Recommends her cousin W J Holdsworth in military service in India to the Cannings.
17. 20 Aug 1856 Letter from Colin Lindsay, London.Recommends his son-in-law Captain Henry Manning, adjutant of the 19th Native Infantry to his cousin Lord Canning and explains the family connection.
18. 21 Apr 1856 Letter from Martin Simonsen, violinist to the King of Denmark, in Calcutta. Requests patronage for a concert, that is declined.
19. 25 Jun 1856 Letter from R Christie, Opium Department, Patna.Encloses his introductory letter from Lord Stuart.
20. 22 Jul 1856 Letter from James Chopin, Calcutta. Requests patronage to work entitled 'The Christian Companion'.
21.17 Oct 1856 Letter from C Dominico, electro-plater and gilder, Calcutta. Request for financial assistance to enable him to open an electro-plating shop enclosed printed copy of his appeal to the public, list of proposed charges, testimonials and transcript of his case against his former employers Arlington and Co heard at the Court of Small Causes on 7 Aug 1856.
22.4 Dec 1856 Letter from Miss Scott, Young Ladies Institution, Calcutta.Invitation to the distribution of prizes in the annual examination of the senior classes, declined by reply.
23. 9 Dec 1856 Letter from Catherine Richards, European Female Orphan Asylum, Calcutta.Invitation to distribute prizes that is declined.
24. 10 Mar 1857 Letter from Mrs Mary Pinson, Calcutta. Request for financial assistance to pay for her arrested husband to go through the court, Lady Canning sends 160 rupees.
25. 13 Mar 1857 Letter from Mrs Eliza Boaz. Requests donation to the Bengal Auxiliary to the London Missionary Society, Lady Canning sends 50 rupees.
26. 17 Mar 1857 Letter from C J Pittar, Charles Nephew & Co, Calcutta. Early application on behalf of his company to sell the quantity of jewels that according to a newspaper report will be arriving in Calcutta, reply states it is unlikely they will be sold.
27. 6 Apr 1857 Letter from J S A H Byrne, Calcutta. States distressed circumstances, in India since 1841 and now out of employment
28. 13 Apr 1857 Letter from Mrs I Horn, Calcutta. Request for financial assistance following the death of her husband, the letter is annotated confirms that she is at present receiving 16 rupees a month relief, an allowance of 50 rupees is sent on Lady Canning's account.
29. 14 Apr 1857 Letter from Mrs Caroline E Cannon, Calcutta. Requests financial assistance to enable her to return to Rangoon following the death of her husband, an allowance of 100 rupees is sent by reply.
30. 27 Apr 1857 Letter from Miss Isabella C Richardson. Requests employment with Lady Canning as means of support for her and her family on the departure of her father from India.
31. 31 May 1857 Letter from M Gregory, Armenian merchant, Calcutta. Requests permission when he registers his new American ship to change the name to 'The Lady Canning', reply agrees to this.
32. 21 Jul 1857 Letter from A W Pinson. Requests further financial assistance, that is refused.
33. 7 Aug 1857 Letter from Mrs Fanny Peile, Camden Villa, Simla. Requests financial assistance for return to England, with long narrative of her escape from Delhi with her husband Lieutenant W P Peile who had been discharged ill from 38th Native Light Infantry before the events of 11 May, 100 rupees is sent to supplement assistance from Bombay Relief fund.
