Items in this file were damaged by fire in Charlotte Canning's tent, Dec 1859 and underwent conservation in 2017.
Material, including correspondence, memos, bills, receipts and accounts, relating to the purchase and commissioning of items for Lady Canning. Purchasing and commissioning of items includes lace, cloth, metalwork and furniture, including purchases by agents. Also includes materials relating to jewels such as the ‘Star Ruby’, and the cleaning and repair of Lady Canning’s jewellery after it was caught in a fire in her tent in Dec 1859. Includes coloured and black and white pen and ink drawings of items of jewellery, as well as plans containing measurements of room at Highcliffe, and plan of Mr Grant’s house at Allahabad. Also accounts such as articles purchased in the Kangra district, 1860-61, & sundry accounts of purchases, 1856-59.
Miscellaneous items include: ‘Abstract of Expenditure & Receipts during 1860 of the Establishment for Gentlewomen During Illness’, London 1861; printed information and rules relating to scheme of work by the London Female Bible & Domestic Mission, in conjunction with the Bible Society; handwritten memo of articles purchased from the presents made by the Maharajah of Jummoo [Jammu?] to the Countess Canning; printed ‘Memo of articles procurable in the markets of the Punjab’, Punjab Agency Umritsur [Amritsar], printed by the Delhi Gazette Press.
Correspondents include: Benjamin Warwick, Calcutta & London; Colonel Pears, Vridachellum; E [Elizabeth] H Muir, Allahabad; Mary Dennis, Nagercoil; Lewin Bowring; Mrs L. M. [Loveday Marion] Murray re: Agra work; Emma Cox; Louisa Brandreth, Delhi & Simla; Edward Fitzgerald Campbell; Reginald F. Saunders, Dhurmsala [Dharamsala]. Also includes draft correspondence by Charlotte Canning.
Burned material consists of : 3 letters, from Philip A P Bouverie, Charlotte Duchess of Buccleuch (incomplete), & unidentified (incomplete) letter, which includes a scrap of embroidered material; Sketch of three-petal embroidery design, by Charlotte Canning, undated, previously used as a wrapper for correspondence from Charles Canning, 1858; 2 letters from Lucy Cheke, Benares, Nov 8 & Jan 10, with accounts for embroidered drapes.
