651. Papers relating to the Governor Generalship in the event of Lord Canning's death, Nov 1858. 1. Confidential letter from Lord Canning stating that he has placed the accompanying letter (number 2, below) in the keeping of the Secretary to Government Secret Department. In the event of Canning’s death the letter is to be sent to the Senior Member of Council by the quickest possible means. 19 Nov 1858. 2. Sealed envelope (opened in 1961) containing an envelope addressed to Lord Canning (Secret and Confidential) and a letter from the Court of Directors, 16 Dec 1857 announcing to Canning that the appointment of Sir P Grant as provisional Governor General in case of Canning's death, resignation, or departure, has been cancelled. Lord Elphinstone would now succeed. Also in the envelope is a copy of the warrant appointing Lord Elphinstone Governor General of India, 16 Dec 1857. Both 1 and 2 were in a further sealed envelope, opened in 1961, labelled ‘Given to me by the Governor General on 25 April 1861 L Bowring.’
