Correspondence with Lord George Bentinck
- Scope & Content:
-
Bundle of correspondence relating to Lord George Bentinck's attempts in 1846 to unearth information relating to Sir Robert Peel's conduct towards George Canning in 1827, after Bentinck had accused Peel of hounding George Canning and equivocating over the issue of Catholic Emancipation. Consists of:
Six letters from Lord George Bentinck, and copies of seven replies from Charles Canning, Jun-Jul 1846.
Copy of letter from Sir Robert Peel, Whitehall Gardens, 31 Jan 1835, to Lady Joan Canning, and copy of her reply 1 Feb 1835, offering Charles Canning a junior Treasury lordship.
Envelope in the hand of Michael Maclagan, 'From Ld. G. Bentinck 1846. An interesting tho' inconclusive episode which should be set in its political context (cf. ch. xv of Disraeli's Life of Ld. Geo. B.). The letter from Ly Canning to Huskisson to which Ld. Geo. B. refers is presumably that printed on pp. 293-9 of the 'Huskisson papers' (ed. Melville) - B.M. Add MS 38755 f.66'
