Letters, copy letters, petitions and memorials (September, 1806 – 1 February, 1823) between G. Canning and various correspondents relating to the representation of Liverpool. Includes:
1. ‘Col. Bolton’s Correspondence with Government, in consequence of Mr. Windham’s New Regulations which led to the resignation of the Royal Liverpool Volunteers.’ (September, 1806). Printed pamphlet.
2. Copy memorial (1813) to Lord Castlereagh from Ellis Leckonby Hodgson.
3. Copy letters (7 – 9 February, 1815) between General Gascoigne and John Backhouse.
4. ‘Extract of a Dispatch from W. Chamberlain, His Majesty’s Consul General, dated Rio de Janeiro, 15 July, 1822.’ (15 July, 1822).
5. Inscription (July, 1822). Several drafts, some numbered, of a document to Canning from ‘a numerous body of his Constituents & friends on his being appointed Governor General of India’.
6. ‘To the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty’s Treasury, The Memorial of Clay Hall of Liverpool, Soap and Candlemaker’ (22 August, 1822).
7. Letter (23 August, 1822) to ‘Messrs Orford & Foster, Liverpool’ from an unidentified sender.
8. ‘To the Right Hon[ble] George Canning &c &c &c’ (27 August, 1822). From the ‘Associated Commercial Bodies of Liverpool’ concerning ‘the respectful acknowledgements for the various and important Services rendered by you to this town, whilst you have been it’s Representative in Parliament ’.
9. Letter (3 September, 1822) to George Syers from Orford & Foster along with an enclosed copy letter to ‘the Commissioners of Excise’ from Orford & Foster.
10. Letter (20 September, 1822) to John Backhouse from John Bowden.
11. Letter (23 September, 1822) to John Backhouse from John Power.
12. Letter (24 September, 1822) to John Backhouse from Mr Dyson.
13. Letter (24 November, 1822) to G. Canning from William Reddall along with an enclosed copy letter (27 September, 1822) of a petition to ‘The Hon[ble] The Commissioners of His Majesty’s Custom House’ from Ellen Bayley.
14. Letter (3 December, 1822) to John Backhouse from John Langan.
15. Report (12 December, 1822). ‘Copy of the decision of the Board of Trade …’ Concerning ‘East India Sugar Duty’.
16. Letter (23 December, 1822) to G. Canning from Robert Lloyd along with a copy letter (c 1822) to the ‘Board of Excise’ from Lloyd.
17. Letter (6 January, 1823) to G. Canning from ‘Mrs Jane Clark’ along with a letter (17 January, 1823) and a note (20 January, 1823) between John Backhouse and unidentified correspondents as well as a record of letters received from and sent to Jane Clark (14 November, 1812 – 18 February, 1823). Concerning prize money due to Mrs Clark’s ‘Late Husband Thomas Clark’.
18. Letter (1 February, 1823) to G. Canning from J. Bolton along with a document containing the ‘Resolutions of a public Meeting of Freemen of Liverpool accepting Mr Canning’s Resignation of the Representation of the Borough’.
19. List (undated) of [military?] personnel.
