- Title:
- Expedition journal: Hudson's Bay
- Scope & Content:
-
Markham's manuscript journal of his journey on board the Alert, and subsequent journey from York Factory to Winnipeg via canoe. The Alert was surveying Hudson's Bay on behalf of the Government of Canada, to establish whether the Hudson Strait was open to navigation for a sufficiently long period during the year, that it would be practicable to establish a sea port to connect by rail with Winnipeg.
The journal opens on Friday 28 May, with details of Markham's preparations. In it Markham describes his journey from Liverpool on the SS Carthaginian, bound for Halifax. On 19 June Halifax was reached, and Markham joined the DSS Alert on 25 June. The Alert took a route by the Gulf of St Lawrence through the strait of Belle Isle, along the Labrador coast, and reached the entrance of the Hudson Strait on 5 July. On 6 August the Alert reached York Factory, where Markham met with three Cree guides, and proceeded via canoe. At 21 August Markham and his guides reached Oxford House, where he obtained the services of two additional guides and continued his journey, reaching Winnipeg on 11 September. After Winnipeg he left for Wisconsin on 15 September, heading back to England on 11 October. The last entry in the journal is dated 26 October.
Folios 115-151 are spotted with the remains of mosquitoes, which plagued Markham's party during their journey from York Factory to Winnipeg.
Several items have been loosely inserted into the volume:
- Letter to Markham from Clanwilliam [likely Richard James Meade, fourth Earl of Clanwilliam, Admiral], f 13.
