Journals written by Sir Albert Hastings Markham, documenting: his polar reconnaissances in the Arctic and the Kara Sea, including a whaling voyage (Add MS 89230/1); his survey of the conditions in the Hudson Bay for the Canadian Government (Add MS 89230/4); his participation in the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876 (Add MS 89230/2); and his time in the Navy, serving in the Mediterranean Fleet, on the Pacific Station, and as head of the Torpedo School (Add MS 89230/3).
The journals are all manuscript in Markham's hand, and also feature inserts such as watercolours, sketches, letters, and memorabilia of his travels and time on board ship.
