Manuscript journal kept by Markham as Commander of the Hydra, on manoeuvres in the Kara sea during the Russo-Turkish War (1878). The first journal entry is dated 7 May; the last 8 November. The Hydra was put out of commission on 23 August, and the entries from 13th September describe Markham's tour of Brittany with Clements and Minna Markham. After touring Brittany they visited the Netherlands and on 23 - 24 October Markham recounts his meeting with several crewmembers of the Willem Barents, recently returned from the Barents Sea, including Captain de Bruyne [Antonius de Bruijne], Koolemans Beynen [Laurens Reinhart Koolemans Beijnen], and photographer William J A Grant.
Additional pages have been bound into the rear of the volume (folios 150-154), containing [in an unknown hand] an entry titled 'Homage to North Pole Travellers', which provides summaries of the speeches given at the dinner in honour of the Willem Barents on 23 October [see Markham's entry, f 119v].
Several watercolours and sketches have been bound or tipped into the volume:
- Recto: watercolour depicting the ruins of the castle of Lihon. Verso: pencil sketch of a man leading an animal, and attached a pressed flower, f 65.
- Recto: watercolour depicting the ruins of Château La Hunaudaye. Verso: faint pencil sketch of three persons under an umbrella, being observed by a fourth, f 69.
- Recto: watercolour depicting the Tour d'Hastings of Tréguier Cathedral. Verso: faint pencil sketch of a group of dogs, f 73.
- Watercolour depicting the harbour at Plumanach, f 76.
- Verso: ink sketch of three women under an umbrella in the rain, f 80.
- Watercolour depicting the Abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre, f 89.
- Watercolour depicting a young boy of the Pupilles Maritime on guard duty, dressed in gaiters and armed with a rifle and bayonet, f 91.
- Watercolour depicting the view from the ruins of the Château de La Roche-Maurice, f 95.
- Ink sketch of eight dogs, f 97.
- Ink sketch of two men preparing fishing nets on shore, f 128.
- Ink sketch of three dogs hitched to a small wagon, f 141.
Several smaller items have been loosely inserted:
- Calling card of Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham, 19 Queen's Gate place, SW, f 24.
- Map and transport card of the Grand Hôtel de Paris, A Laval, f 116.
- Card bearing a printed illustration showing a boy and a girl on a small gondola, annotated on recto 'Mrs Markham', and annotated on verso with a list of locations passed during the voyage, f 133. [same hand as folios 150-154?]
