Journal by Captain Markham of his time aboard the Norwegian cutter Isbjörn (referred to as Isbjörnen by Markham throughout the volume) under Sir Henry Gore Booth, describing the voyage which took in the west coast of Novaya Zemlya, the Matyushin Shar, the Kara Sea, and a northward push in the ice between Novaya Zemlya and Spitzbergen. The Isbjörn achieved latitude 78 degrees 24 ' north before being obliged to turn back because of the ice.
Includes sketch map depicting the coast and the edge of the land ice around Lystina, Berg, Duck ,Turn, and Cross Islands, f 207.
Includes translation of Russian Ukase granted to Sir Henry Gore Booth, permitting him to prosecute seal shooting and fishing, f 190v.

Meteorological observations were recorded in tables at the end of each of the original notebooks (subsequently bound into this volume), and can be found at folios 102v, 190r, and 289r. Details of the pay of the crew, and of the animals shot during the voyage ('Game list'), can be found on folio 288v.

- Bound volume, made up from three original journal notebooks. Half dark blue morocco over pebbled boards, upper covers stamped in gilt with the Markham arms and crest, spine lettered in gilt. Several loose items have been inserted into the volume.

A narrative of the voyage was published as Albert Markham, Northward Ho!, (Macmillan and Co., 1879). A version of this journal was published as Albert Markham, Clements Markham (ed) A Polar Reconnaissance, being the voyage of the "Isbjörn" to Novaya Zemla in 1879, with maps and illustrations.
