HMS Triumph Volume One (Pacific Station)

Volumes 1-3 of Markham's Triumph journal, documenting his time in the Pacific Station.
The journal commences on 3 November 1879, and provides details of Markham's trip to Callao to meet with the HMS Triumph: arrived at St Thomas, Jamaica, 15 November; visit to the Royal Naval Hospital at Port Royal; time spent in Colon and Panama City whilst waiting for a steamer to travel to Callao, Peru.
The Triumph departed Callao, 20 December, and was recalled on 22 December due to reports of revolution in Peru. The journal provides details of the following: expeditions to Lima, and a journey on the Aroya railway [Oroya] to Maucana and Chicla; leaving Callao 24 January 1880; arrived at the Lobos Islands on 27 January; Markham's trip during February to the Galapagos Islands (Charles Island) where he collected lepidoptera and bird specimens; 4 March made land at Mexico and anchored at Acapulco, from where Markham made a small expedition inland to collect lepidoptera; from Mexico the Triumph proceeded to San Francisco, arriving 2 April; departed, and arrived at Esquimalt, Vancouver, 1 April. The last entry in this volume is dated 24 May 1880.
Throughout the volume Markham provides details of his travelling companions and fellow crew members; life on board ship; observations on the weather, landscape, animal life, collection of botanical, animal and insect specimens; details of his expeditions, and social events attended; and the political and military situation.

- Station list for the Oroya Railwoad, f 88.
- Central Railway timetable for November, departures from Lima, (in Spanish), f 90.
- Letter to Markham from Admiral Abel-Nicolas Georges Henri Bergasse du Petit-Thouars, dated 26 December 1879, inviting him to dine on board the Victorieuse, (in French), ff 99-100.
- Letter to Markham from Rear Admiral Christopher Raymond Perry Rodgers, on board the USS Pensacola, dated 20 January 1880, ff 122-123.
