HMS Triumph Volume Three (Pacific Station)
- Scope & Content:
-
Volumes 7-9 of Markham's Triumph journal, documenting his time in the Pacific Station.
Commences on 2 February 1881, whilst stationed at Callao to observe the hostilities between Chile and Peru. The Triumph then travelled, anchoring at Coquimbo and Valparaiso, with Markham making several on shore expeditions, including to Santiago. The Triumph then continued its tour in the Pacific Station, cruising the coast of south America, calling at Taltal, Antofagasta, Iquique, Arequipa, before heading back to Callao. Markham visited Lake Titicaca and the surrounding country. The journal provides plenty of information on the accident of 23 November, when a tin of xerotine siccative caused an explosion on ship, killing three men and injuring several others. The journal closes with an entry dated 28 November 1881.
Throughout the volume Markham provides details of his travelling companions and fellow crew members; life on board ship; observations on the weather, landscape, animal life, collection of botanical, animal and insect specimens; details of his expeditions, and social events attended; and the political and military situation.
