First volume of the journal documenting Albert Markham's time as Commodore of the Training Squadron, consisting of HMS Active (his flagship), Volage, Rover (later replaced by the Ruby), and Calypso. The journal opens on 10 November 1886, and documents the following: Markham's first voyage to the West Indies, during which time the Active called at Barbados, Tobago, Trinidad, Grenada, St Vincent, St Lucia, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Antigua, Nevis and St Kitts, before heading back to Britain in May. On 17 July 1887 the Active participated in the Naval Review at Spithead. The Active's 1887 winter cruise took in Vigo, Arose Bay, Gibraltar and Madeira, and the Active was joined by Clements Markham at Gibraltar. Following a brief stop in England the Active travelled to Tenerife, then on to St Martin and Bermuda, before heading back to Britain in March 1888. The last entry in this volume is dated 3 May 1888.
The entries provide details of Markham's duties, the day to day administration and activities of the Training Squadron, visits to dockyards and naval establishments, participation in manoeuvres and reviews, descriptions of his brief expeditions on shore, and the social engagements he attended. It features Markham's comments on his fellow officers, the men who served under his command, and on technological and engineering developments in naval warfare.
