- Scope & Content:
-
Volumes 1 to 3 of Markham's journal documenting his time as Rear Admiral and second-in-command in the Mediterranean. Markham's flagship was the Trafalgar, but at various points between 1892 -1893 he transferred to the Phaeton, the Australia and the Nile. Markham was made Rear Admiral in January 1892, and the journal opens in March. The squadron was mainly stationed in the Levant and in Egyptian waters, and often cruised in company with the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean fleet.
Markham records his travels and expeditions to Suda Bay, Salonica, Provato Bay, Lemnos, Nauplia, the Gulf of Kos, Ephesus, Thermopylae, Athens, Vathy, Malta, Thessaly, and the Monastery of St Stephanos. The last entry in the volume is dated 18 January 1893. The journal contains detailed entries describing Markham's daily activities, naval manoeuvres and gunnery practice, visits to ports and naval establishments, expeditions and sightseeing trips, and details of his social engagements.
The following loose items have been inserted into the volume:
