- 1. ff. 1-23. "Put Away the Flutes" for high voice, flute, oboe and string quartet, op. 11, 1947. A setting of words by W.R. Rodgers. Autograph pencil score and two annotated copies of the printed score, published by Lengnick; one of the copies signed "René Soames". Possibly used for the performance of this piece that took place during the 22nd I.S.C.M. Festival at Amsterdam in 1948 – see under MS Mus. 1747/2/3/1/1 or the Monthly Musical Record, July-August, 1948.
- 2. f.. 24-33. "Oxus", op. 47; 1967. A setting of words from Matthew Arnold’s poem "Sohrab and Rustrum". For voice and orchestra or ensemble. Draft score in pencil with with ink annotations and tone-row. Deposit 2001/11. See also Add MS 71825 for programme note.
- 3. ff. 34-38. "The Donkey", op. 55; 1971. A setting of words by G. K. Chesterton. For Owen Brannigan. Photocopy of copyist's manuscript. Add MS 71731 has autograph pencil and ink scores.
- 4. ff. 39-152. "Fantasia on British Airs" for five military bands, tenor and chorus, op. 68, 1976. Instrumental parts: transparencies, in various copyists' hands. (Flutes 1 and 2 , piccolo, oboe 1 and 2, E flat clarinet, B flat clarinet 1, 2 and 3, E flat alto clarinet, B flat bass clarinet, contra-bass clarinet, bassoons, E flat alto saxophones 1 and 2, B flat tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, B flat cornets 1, 2 and 3,B flat trumpets, horns in F 1,2 3 and 4, trombones 1, 2 and 3, baritones, tuba, string bass, timpani, side drum/tenor drum/bass drum, glockenspiel/vibraphone/xylophone, cymbal/triangle/tam-tam, wood blocks. The copies were made in the United States and corrected by Searle on his return to Great Britain. (The episode is described in chapter 18 of Searle’s autobiography ‘Quadrille with a Raven’ (see MS Mus. 1747/2/6)).
