Travel Journal of Mary Cecilia Blencowe, 1870-71
- Scope & Content:
- First journal of travels made by Mary Cecilia Blencowe (1852-c 1929) shortly after the end of the Franco-Prussian war. Blencowe was born in 1852 in Northamptonshire. Her first entries are dated October 1870. There is then a short gap before an entry dated 27 March 1871 written in Dover, where her journeys proper begin. Her group, including her mother, brothers John and Alfred and John’s wife Katherine (referred to as Kitty), pass through Brussels, Cologne, Munich, Verona, Venice, and Florence in the first volume, with the majority of her entries written in Venice (described as ‘once the proud queen of the Adriatic’ and ‘very beautiful’). Blencowe writes critically of the Prussians and favourably of both the French and ‘beautiful Italy’. Somewhat prophetically, she notes that ‘France has fought and been conquered. But conquered only for a moment and – we shall see?’. The final entry for this volume is written in Florence.
