- Title:
- Travel Journal of Mary Cecilia Blencowe, 1871-2
- Scope & Content:
-
The second volume begins in the middle of the same journey at that of volume 1. Blencowe travels through Genoa, Milan, Stresa, Iselle, Gondo, Brig, Lausanne, Vesoul and Paris before returning to London. She is particularly sad to leave Italy, writing that ‘we are leaving you much too soon. But then if we were to wait till the great heat, mama would be ill, we should all be very hot, and very much bitten by mosquitos, so on the whole perhaps it is better to go’. There are fewer entries written while she is in Switzerland, although from the dates of the entries she spends a considerable length of time here. Upon her return she writes that she will stop writing until she leaves again – which she does on 12 May 1872.
On this second voyage she travels to Brussels, Lahn, Bad Ems, Cologne and Spa, before returning to England via Spa. While in Bad Ems she describes a ‘very curious specimen of the human race, a very little weird old man…He looked like some creature of another world, but what sort of world I cannot say.’ Underneath this description is drawn a small image of the man. This journey is shorter than her previous one, and the majority of her time is spent in Spa visiting the baths with Kitty (her sister in law). This journal ends mid sentence, ce, and is followed by some assorted pencil notes and an asterisked entry from July.
