Origin: Constantinople(?). Originally executed to form part of a set for a gospel book of exceptionally large size. Later cut down to form part of another 12th-century gospel book now Add MS 5112.
Provenance: Acquired as part of Add MS 5112 at the Monastery of Simonopetra in Mount Athos by Antonios Trifillis and later by Anthony Askew (1722-1774). Purchased at Askew's sale, 15 March 1785, lot 622.
