- ff.1-29: Sketches and structural notes for 'Pentecost Music' (op. 22), and a drafted letter (ff.7v-8).
- ff.29v-49: Various sketches and noted ideas, some unidentified. Includes a setting of 'The Owl and the Pussycat'; revisions of 'Orlando's Music' (op. 14); brief sketches of a setting of the Mass for a capella voices; pitch-sets; and unidentified notes and sketched ideas for orchestral/symphonic piece(s).
- ff.49v-71: Sketches for String Quartet no. 2 (op. 24), with draft score of opening c.75 bars.
- ff.71v-77: Unidentified brief sketches and pitch-sets, followed by structural notes exploring "permutations of ABC as structural matrix". Pasted to back board is a coloured structural diagram for string quartet.
Work-book 5: Dated 24 March 1977 onwards, no end date.
- ff.81-132: Draft score of String Quartet no. 2 (op. 24).
- ff.132v-133: Short essay on the implications of the theory of relativity, and pasted sample pieces of decorative Venetian paper.

Work-book 6: Dated 2 January 1978 - 15 April 1978. Sketches for various works, including: early sketches for 'Cry' (op. 27) (originally titled 'The Wake' and scored for voices with solo flute and drums - some of this material (ff.165v-166) was also used in 'Missa Tiburtina' (op. 40)); a newspaper cutting from The Guardian, Wednesday 18th January 1978, on Corrine Bougaard (ff.173v-175); and notes and sketches for 'Pentecost Music' (op. 22).

- ff.241-301: Sketches for 'A World Within' (op. 25), and a draft score titled 'Charlotte's Lullaby' (ff.279v-282), which is closely related to the 'Dodo's Lullaby' in 'Scrap-book' (op. 16) for piano.
- ff.301v-302: Revised passages for 3rd movement of Suite (op. 21) for guitar.
- ff.302v-313: Sketches for 'Cry' (op. 27).
- ff.313v-316: General notes, including detail on baryton strings and fingerboard (used in writing 'Freewheeling' (op. 29)).
