Work-book 43: Dated 15 April 1988 onwards, no end date. Sketches for 'Harmonies of Hell' (op. 53). Includes a roughly sketched stage plan (f.16); and general notes.
Work-book 44: Dated 23 June 1988 - February 1989. Early ideas and sketches for a commission from English National Opera (ENO): a post-holocaust opera called 'Boss' with libretto by Bryan Rostron, and a setting of Caryl Churchill's 'Serious Money'. Also contains sketches for 'The song of Leviathan' (op. 52); abandoned sketches for clarinet, viola and piano variously titled 'Toothbrush trio' and 'Between the lines'; sketches for 'No man's land' (op. 56); and general notes, including drafted letters.

Work-book 46: Dated 19 April 1989 - September 1989. Sketches for 'A memory of sky' (op. 54), 'Boss', 'No quiet place' (op. 55), and 'No man's land' (op. 56). Also contains notes on achieving a trance state with music, and on the equivalent of entoptic patterns in sound (ff.255-256v); and notes and sketches for an untitled music drama, with a scene in which a man attempts to strangle a woman (ff.257-259). General notes are scattered throughout this volume in the form of brief diary entries, lists and transcribed text. Includes notes on e-numbers, lists of nuclear and other man-made disasters, and transcribed information on bison.
