- ff.1-13: Sketches for a piano sonata in A major, later abandoned.
- ff.13v-19: Sketches for 'No quiet place' (op. 55), followed by diary entries dated 24th September - 10th October 1989.
- ff.19v-25: Further sketches for piano sonata in A major, later abandoned.
- ff.25v-27: Brief sketch for children's opera 'Megalomania' (later abandoned), followed by diary entries for 23rd - 31st October 1989.
- ff.27v-35: Unidentified sketches and notes, dating from late November/early December 1989. Some scored for piano, others for clarinet and violin.
- ff.35v-65: Early sketches for 'Hamlet', dated 23 January 1990.
- ff.65v-79: Sketches and general notes, some unidentified. Includes sketches for 'No man's land' (op. 56) (ff.66v-68); notes on a wind quintet; crossed out sketches for a choral work; and a list of records.
Work-book 47a: Dated December 1989 - January 1990. Sketches and draft scores, some unidentified. Includes: notation of sheep-bells in Crete; sketches for children's opera 'Megalomania' including the Megalomaniac national anthem (later abandoned); work on what became 'The song of the tortoise' (op. 59); and a draft score for the Mousetrap play in 'Hamlet'.
Work-book 48: Dated January 1990 onwards, no end date.
- ff.124-129: Unidentified notes, including: notes on the forces of Bournemouth Sinfonietta; unidentified German text; and structural notes, possibly for 'Circle of silence' (op. 57).
- ff.129v-136: Sketches for 'No man's land' (op. 56), setting Lewis Carroll's 'Jaberwocky'.
- ff.136v-182: Sketches for 'Hamlet'. Includes sketched stage plans for the Murder of Gonzago (ff.163v-164v), and a diary entry for 12th April 1990 recording a meeting with English National Opera (ENO) (ff.181v-182). Also contains brief sketch for 'Megalomania' (ff.152v-153).
- ff.182v-191: Further work on 'No man's land' (op. 56), with addition of text by Breyten Breytenbach.
- ff.192-209: Sketches for 'Circle of silence' (op. 57). Also includes notes on vocal ranges of The King's Singers (f.192).
Work-book 49: Dated 8 November 1990 - 17 March 1991. Detailed sketches for 'Circle of silence' (op. 57). Includes brief diary entries for 6th March 1991 (f.282) and 7th March 1991 (f.291).
