Work-book 50: Dated 21 March 1991 - 14 August 1991.
- ff.1-4: Notes on 'The song of the tortoise' (op. 59), and unidentified notes on tuning.
- ff.7-25v: Detailed sketches for 'Circle of silence' (op. 57).
- ff.25v-67v: Sketches for 'Zebra music' (op. 58) and String quartet no. 3 (op. 61) (ff.59v-63). Also contains notes on house-building plans (ff.29v-30); notes on 'Circle of silence' (op. 57); further ideas for commission from English National Opera (ENO) (ff.50v-53); and a note recording the purchase of a plot of land in Konkonuru (f.55).
- ff.68-80: Early sketches for String quartet no.3 (op. 61). These sketches were largely discarded and only those on ff.72v-74 relate to later sketches.
Work-book 51: Dated 14 August 1991 onwards, no end date. This book is thought to have been used concurrently with work-book 52.
- ff.81-90: Early sketches for String quartet no. 3 (op. 61), with sketches for the alphabetical list in 'Circle of silence' (op. 57) (ff.87v-89).
- ff.91-145: Sketches for 'The song of the tortoise' (op. 59).
- ff.145v-159: Largely blank except for: diary entry for 7 September 1992 on work completed and planned (ff.145v-146); brief sketch for 'Canto for flute' (op. 71a) (ff.146v-147); plans for travel to the UK (f.155); and notes on livestock for the property in Konkonuru, Ghana (ff.155v-156).
Work-book 52: Undated, but thought to have been used between June and September 1992. Sketches and a draft score for 'Song of the tortoise' (op. 59), with sketched plans for house in Konkonuru, Ghana (ff.234-235).
Work-book 53: Dated February 1992. Sketches, draft score and structural notes for String quartet no. 3 (op. 61).
