Work-book 62: Dated 1 February 1997 onwards, no end date.
- ff.1-53: Sketches for 'Chinese whispers' (op. 75). Also includes early ideas for 'HAVOC' (op. 83) (ff.18v-21, 29v-30, & 52v-53); a brief sketch and note on the completion of 'Mr Leary's mechanical Maggot' (op. 74) (f.22v); and a diary entry for 2nd May 1997 on the general election.
- ff.53-83: Sketches for prologue and Act I of 'Hamlet'. Also includes pasted newspaper cutting of obituary for Paul Reade (f.59); and notes from travel in France (ff.75-77).
- ff.84-87: Abandoned ideas for a song with French text, followed by general notes, some unidentified. Includes structural workings for unidentified piece; lists of concert repertoire and performers; and a limerick inside back board.
Work-book 63: Dated 3 September 1997 - 24 May 1998.
- ff.90-150: Sketches for the prologue and Act I, scene 1 of 'Hamlet'. Also includes a double page of verses in English and French (ff.90v-92); an abandoned idea for a secular version of the Passion (ff.126v-127); and the title of 'HAVOC' (op. 83) is stated on f.142.
- ff.150v-153: Sketches for 'Winter solstice carol' (op. 79).
- ff.153v-172: Further drafts for Act I scene 1 of 'Hamlet'. Includes a concert review cutting from The Strad (f.158).
- ff.172v-183: Sketches and general notes, some unidentified. Includes a setting of a poem by Hans Georg Bulla; a postcard and map showing the Hotel Astoria in Vienna; notes on 'HAVOC' (op. 83); a sketch setting a text titled 'Autumn'; and a newspaper cutting on commonly unread literature.
Work-book 64: Dated September 1997 onwards, no end date. Note inside front board records that the work-book was used for sketches in September-October 1997, then as a regular work-book from April 1998. Various photographs pasted throughout volume, and a pressed oak leaf (f.250).
- ff.185-202: Ideas and sketches for French chansons; a happy birthday song for Phyllis Lee; and a sketched song titled 'Lucky number blues'.
